Smarter Balanced

Oregon high school students with Smarter Balanced statewide assessment test results in English Language Arts and Mathematics may be able to receive a waiver from taking the required Lane Community College Placement tests if they meet criteria below.

In order to qualify for the waiver, the student must submit a copy of their Smarter Balanced assessment scores to the Testing Office at smarterbalanced@lanecc.edu, or fax them to 541-463-5020. Within approximately two business days, an email with results of the waiver request will be sent to the student.

Smarter Balanced English scores placing into college level English:

Level 4: Score of 2682 and higher permits the student to receive a waiver to the Reading and Writing placement test.

Level 3: Score of 2583-2681, permits the student to receive a waiver to the Reading and Writing placement test.

Level 2: Score of 2493-2582, does not qualify for a waiver.

Level 1: Score of 2492 or lower, does not qualify for a waiver.

The waiver allows the student to register for college level Writing 121 without taking Reading and Writing placement tests. The student can register for Writing 121 and create their first term schedule after talking to an Academic Advisor at the Start Right Advising session.*

Smarter Balanced Math scores placing into college level Math:

Level 4: Score of 2718 and higher permits the student to receive a waiver to the Math placement test.

Level 3: Score of 2628-2717, permits the student to receive a waiver to the Math placement test.

Level 2: Score of 2543-2627, does not qualify for a waiver.

Level 1: Score of 2542 or lower, does not qualify for a waiver.

The waiver allows the student to register for either college level Math 105 or college level Math 111 without taking the Math placement test. The student can then register for Math and create their first term schedule after talking to an Academic Advisor at a Start Right Advising session.* If a student wishes to start at a higher level Math than either Math 105 or Math 111, they may opt to take the Math placement test instead of seeking the waiver.

*The Start Right Advising session is one of the required steps to enroll at Lane Community College. Please return to the “Steps to Enroll” and continue the enrollment process.
