“I would like to use my degree to open a clinic to serve special needs patients… I would like the opportunity to provide more accessible care for those who need it most.” - Abby
Abby is a Dental Hygiene student at Lane Community College who transitioned from an art background after discovering a passion for dental care during her four years working at a local dental office. Motivated by personal experience caring for her brother with special needs, Abby is dedicated to advocating for accessible dental care for underserved populations, particularly those with special needs like her brother. Balancing her studies and work as a caretaker, she plans to continue her education through a bridge program and aspires to possibly teach or open her own clinic someday. Abby is excited to support fellow students in accessing scholarship opportunities while managing her role as a student board member for the Dental Hygiene Association.

Cheyenne is a dedicated nursing student whose 14-year background in medical roles and personal experiences—such as caring for her hospitalized father and supporting her husband, a Marine-turned- firefighter/paramedic (an LCC alum)—shaped her decision to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. Despite early discouragement due to financial concerns, she persevered, earning scholarships that made her return to school possible. Now on track to graduate in June 2026, Cheyenne is passionate about emergency and surgical care, drawn to fast-paced environments where she can listen to and advocate for patients. Inspired by compassionate nurses who cared for her father, she aims to bring the same empathy to her future work. Balancing her healthcare journey with family life, she and her husband support each other through the challenges of their careers, united by a deep commitment to service, to each other, and to their family.

Chris, a passionate creative, transitioned from a career in construction to pursuing ceramics, inspired by high school art classes and a desire for self-expression. At Lane Community College, Chris has developed a deep respect for functional pottery and traditional firing techniques, planning to earn a master’s degree in ceramics with the goal of becoming a professor teaching ceramics and other arts. Receiving the Tom Rohr Scholarship has been pivotal in supporting his artistic journey, connecting him to the ceramics community and inspiring him to foster community-building among students. Chris aims to blend traditional and modern art techniques and provide students with access to affordable materials through community partnerships. He values art education not only for skill development but also for confidence-building. Chris believes in encouraging others to cultivate their creativity no matter their profession.
David
“I am already working as an EMT for a local company that provides medical support to wildland fires, and during the fire season I will be on the front lines providing for the medical needs of our wildland firefighters. Earning my RN will equip me to continue this work at a deeper level.” - David
David is a dedicated professional who transitioned from a teaching career to healthcare, recently earning his paramedic license and participating in a pilot program at Lane Community College to become a registered nurse. Inspired by his mother’s successful career change from school librarian to nurse midwife, David embraces lifelong learning and hopes to be a strong role model for his children. His teaching background has enhanced his organizational and communication skills, aiding his success in rigorous healthcare programs. Grateful for scholarship support that eased financial challenges, David is actively engaged in various learning opportunities and continues to pursue growth in his evolving healthcare career.

Jamari, a student from Central Oregon, is passionate about nature, sports, and conservation, and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics with a focus on climate science and policy at the University of Oregon. Actively involved with Lane Community College’s Black Student Union, he has participated in community outreach and events like the Sneaker Ball. Jamari credits his mother’s steadfast support for helping him navigate his educational journey and emphasizes the importance of financial literacy, a value he actively promotes. He is considering a conservation internship and aspires to be a role model in public speaking and community engagement, combining his interests in business and environmental stewardship.

“Becoming a mother while I was still in high school made me feel like a lot of my choices were already made for me…being able to pursue higher education, especially in a field I’m passionate about will provide an easier life for my family and is one of my greatest personal accomplishments.” - Kayla
Kayla is a resilient and creative individual who transitioned from retail to a career in drone maintenance after a vocational rehabilitation program identified her aptitude for engineering. A graduate of Lane Community College’s drone program, she launched a drone repair business supporting local farmers and is back to LCC to expand her work as an aviation maintenance technician. As a single mother of two, Kayla benefits from scholarships that ease financial stress and allow her to focus on school, where she is active in campus life—performing as a clown at the Spring Fair and sharing her love of the banjo. Despite experiencing many challenges, especially in her early life, she remains driven by a desire for independent, focused work and takes pride in her children, all while continuing to build a meaningful career on her own terms.

“I became interested in graphic design as a young artist, and found that visual communication was something that suited me well. My post-graduate career goal is to work at a local design firm to gain experience and contribute to the businesses I grew up with…” - Lily
Lily, a passionate graphic design student, is following in her sister’s, parents, and grandmother’s footsteps by attending Lane Community College and pursuing a career in the arts. With experience in art competitions and exhibitions, she is committed to building a future in design, aiming to work at a firm before transitioning into freelance projects for musicians and artists. Despite societal pressure to prioritize financial gain, Lily remains focused on creative fulfillment. She is currently considering a scholarship opportunity to study in New Zealand, weighing the chance to earn a bachelor's degree abroad against the challenge of leaving her close-knit community. Encouraged by mentors and inspired by stories of international growth, Lily is exploring how stepping outside her comfort zone might expand both her personal and professional horizons.

Miguel is a dedicated student who overcame significant challenges, including homelessness and dropping out of high school, before earning his GED at age 23. With the support of mentors at LCC, who helped him navigate financial aid and transfer pathways, he is now pursuing a certificate in Human Services with the goal of becoming a mental health therapist. Driven by personal experience, Miguel is passionate about supporting individuals facing anxiety and depression. Transformative classes in communication and Mestizo culture have deepened his understanding of identity and improved his family relationships, reinforcing his commitment to creating change through empathy and education.
Miles
“I am a first generation college student and I am excited that I have chosen a career that will allow me to help others, when they most need help…I want to be able to give back to my community by working at a hospital in Springfield.” - Miles
Miles is a second-year nursing student who transitioned from pre-med to nursing after working as a CNA and realizing his passion for it. Adopted and financially savvy since age 16, his journey highlights perseverance. He typically balances multiple jobs to make ends meet, so thanks to scholarship support, he has a little more freedom to focus on his studies and spending time with and supporting his wife. Passionate about pediatric nursing, Miles hopes to work locally in the Eugene-Springfield area. Beyond nursing, he enjoys playing piano and finding community with his church band. His journey highlights perseverance, financial savvy, and a commitment to helping others.
Nekichwey
“College has already begun to change my life. I’m gaining knowledge and experiences that are helping me grow both personally and professionally. My dream is to create a safe space for others to heal and break free from cycles of pain.” - Nekichwey
Nekichwey, is a resilient student whose challenging upbringing was marked by loss, addiction, and poverty, fueled her passion for healing and helping others. She enrolled at Lane Community College and discovered a calling in psychology and therapy, particularly EMDR and somatic therapy. Motivated to serve Indigenous communities with culturally competent care, she plans to transfer to the University of Oregon to pursue a double major in business and psychology, ultimately aiming to become a psychotherapist serving reservations like Pine Ridge. Her strong business acumen combined with her lived experience positions her as a promising future leader in Indigenous mental health.
Sara
“As a young mother, I was deeply impacted by the nurses who cared for me--offering compassionate, holistic support when I needed it most. I hope to give that same level of care to others in my community, especially new and young parents navigating the challenges of early parenthood.” - Sara
Sara came to LCC after leaving high school to raise her family. She earned her GED with the support of Lane Community College mentors while caring for her twin daughters in the NICU. Now in her final year of the nursing program at Lane, she balances a part-time hospital job in Florence with a demanding commute to Eugene for clinicals and classes. Sara aspires to work in perinatal healthcare, particularly in NICU or labor and delivery, and credits scholarships for enabling her to manage work, school, and family responsibilities. Her dedication and perseverance make her a role model for other nursing students pursuing similar opportunities.
Stephen
“I craved helping others in a more direct and impactful way. This degree will accomplish that goal, but it is not the end of my journey.” - Stephen
Stephen is a Navy veteran with a decade of experience working on submarines and in various management roles who transitioned into nursing after being inspired by a coworker’s medical career. He chose Lane Community College to pursue nursing, motivated by a desire to provide compassionate, direct care. Stephen gained valuable experience as an ER technician in a rural hospital, fueling his interest in emergency nursing and obstetrics. He balances family life with his studies so he appreciates LCC for its convenience and proximity—making our College the perfect fit for his family. Looking ahead, Stephen plans to further his education with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
Thatcher
“When I was young, I spent hours tinkering with wires and parts around the house, trying to make or fix anything that moved… My long-term goal is to combine my creativity with technical skills while working in an engineering field.” - Thatcher
Thatcher, a recent high school graduate with a background in theater, is a student in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program at LCC. Excited about the hands-on learning and future opportunities in cinematography and forestry, he brings a strong interest in both fields as well as 3D printing and engineering. Thatcher has also managed dyslexia and ADHD through time management and technology supports. Grateful for the scholarship support he received, Thatcher aspires to mentor fellow students and encourage them to pursue similar opportunities. His passion for drone technology, particularly in cinematic applications, reflects his creative roots and enthusiasm for emerging fields.
