SEVIS Academic Standards

According to immigration regulations, all international students are expected to make sufficient academic progress over the course of their studies. For IESL international students, this means that you must successfully pass all of your classes and make progress to higher levels. For college-level international students, this means that you must successfully pass a minimum of 12 credits and maintain a 2.0 or higher Grade Point Average (GPA) every term with no NC (no credit), NP (no pass), I (incomplete) or F grades on your transcript.

Lane's International Programs policy is specifically designed to help you maintain your F-1 status and meet your educational goals. We have designed the Success Program to help you build skills in areas you may need to be more successful academically.

NOTE: Lane's overall Academic Probation and Dismissal policies are for all students, especially for those receiving federal financial aid; however, International Students have stricter requirements as stated in the immigration regulations above.

Failure to Enroll

If you register for less than or drop below 12 credits (college level) or 20 class hours per week (IESL) or drop classes without first getting permission from an international advisor, your SEVIS record may be terminated. This means you will have to:

Leave the U.S. within 10 business days of dropping below the minimum requirement, OR

File for reinstatement, which is a long, expensive process and can be denied by immigration.

Failure to Make Progress

If at the college level you earn less than a 2.0 GPA and/or do not successfully pass 12 credits OR at the IESL level do not successfully complete 20 class hours per week the following actions will occur:

  1. Your grades and academic record will be reviewed at the end of the term.
  2. You may receive either an email of concern, or a notification that you will be placed in the Success Program as a condition to continuing your studies at Lane, or be disqualified from Lane.
    1. If you receive an email of concern, it is because your records from the previous term reflect academic difficulty and/or non-passing grades. You are not required to be on the success program, but you are highly encouraged to take measures to improve your academic performance for the next term by attending tutoring and participating in Progress Reports with each of your instructors.
    2. If you continue to have less than a 2.0 GPA and/or earn less than 12 credits/20 class hours per week for a second term, you will be placed in the Success Program. If you receive an email that you are required to follow the Success Program, you will be required meet the terms of the success program or be disqualified at the end of the term. In addition to the required Progress Reports and meeting with your academic advisor, students on the success program are encouraged to take advantage of tutoring resources.
    3. If you have a severe violation of progress or have previously been on the Success Program contract for one or more terms and receive less than a 2.0 GPA and/or successfully pass less than 12 credits/20 class hours per week, you may be automatically disqualified from Lane.
  3. If you disagree with your Success Program placement, you have the right to submit an appeal form with additional documentation explaining why you don't think you need to be placed in the Success Program. The appeal form will be attached to your Success Program notification.
    1. If the appeal is accepted, you will not be placed in the Success Program.
    2. If the appeal is denied, you will have to either participate in the Success Program and follow its requirements to continue at Lane, or transfer to another institution or return home within 10 business days of the denial notification.
  4. At the end of your term on the Success Program, your grades and compliance with the Success Program requirements will be reviewed and you will face one of the following scenarios:

Completion of the Success Program

If you follow all of the requirements of the Success Program, achieve a 2.0 GPA or higher and successfully pass 12 credits/20 class hours per week, you will receive a congratulatory end-of-term assessment email informing you that you have successfully completed the Success Program. This means that the following term, you will no longer be required to complete Progress Reports in order to be a student at Lane. However, you are encouraged to continue to attend tutoring, to participate in Progress Reports and regular check-ins with your instructors, and to use other campus resources to maintain and improve your academic performance.

Once the Success Program is completed, students MUST maintain a 2.0 GPA and successfully pass a minimum of 12 credits/20 class hours per week EVERY TERM or risk disqualification.

Success Program Extension

If you have shown significant improvement and followed most aspects of the Success Program requirements but did not maintain a 2.0 GPA and/or successfully pass 12 credits/20 class hours per week either during your first term in the Success Program or during any term after you have already been in the Success Program once, you may be recommended for a Success Program extension (another term in the Success Program). The Success Program extension may be during a consecutive term (the term right after your first term in the Success Program) or it may be during a later term (if you have already been in the Success Program once before).

Disqualification from Lane

  1. If you do not follow the requirements of the Success Program, you may be disqualified from Lane Community College at the end of the term. Any student who does not meet the Success Program requirements and/or does not show improvement will be disqualified and will receive an official email, phone call and letter from Lane International Programs.
  2. If a student has previously completed two terms in the Success Program and in a later term fails to achieve a 2.0 GPA and/or successfully complete 12 credits/20 class hours per week, they may face disqualification.
  3. Upon receiving a disqualification notification, students have the option to petition the disqualification decision by submitting an appeal form along with any additional documentation to the Director of International Programs by Tuesday at 5 pm during Week 1 of the following term (the deadline for reviewing appeals).
  4. If the student chooses not to appeal or if the appeal is denied, the student must choose from one of the following options:
    1. Transfer to a new institution immediately and have their SEVIS record transferred within 10 business days of the appeal deadline,
    2. Have their record terminated in SEVIS and return to their home country within 10 business days of the appeal deadline.
  5. If the student chooses to reapply to Lane in the future, they will have to submit an official academic transcript showing evidence of academic good standing (successfully passing all classes with a minimum of 12 credits) for at least two quarter terms (which is equivalent to 6 months of study).
