Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention

One in four women in the United States will be victims of Domestic Violence. It is not easy to get out of a Domestic Violence relationship. Most of the time, it takes more than one time to leave. Many victims will follow the pattern of Domestic Violence into a new relationship. Many survivors of Domestic Violence become homeless. Up to 50% of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing intimate partner violence.

The Public Safety Department at Lane Community College is dedicated to educating the community on Domestic Violence and helping victims in abusive relationships. Public Safety provides useful resources for victims of Domestic Violence. On-campus presentations help victims to formulate plans for leaving these violent relationships. Tips on where to go, who to call, what to have with you, how to stay safe and other crucial information, is provided for victims. Content such as legal services, emergency shelters, crisis lines to call, victim services programs, sexual assault support services, and other community services are also included within presentations.

The domestic violence presentations were put together with the goal of helping people out of abusive relationships, recognizing abusive relationships (whether it is their own relationship or a friends/family). The presentations give participants information about warning signs of abuse, what abuse is, how to make a plan and get away safely, and provides resources around the college and the community (both emergency and legal). Other information provided covers restraining orders and stalking orders, and handouts on resources and safety planning.
