Once you have reviewed and accepted your financial aid, we will pay you the second week of the term. Financial aid cannot pay you until the second week because we must verify that you actually attend classes.
The second week of the term we will draw down the money from the Department of Education and use it to pay your tuition and fees at Lane. If there is any money leftover after we’ve collected our payment, we will issue you a refund.
Refunds via myLane
Lane Community College will deliver your financial aid refund to the bank of your choice by direct deposit or by paper check. Learn how to set up your Direct Deposit.

Read the Terms and Conditions!
Before anyone is paid financial aid, they have to agree to the terms and conditions. It is a short list of your responsibilities as a financial aid student. Make sure you read and accept the Terms and Conditions located on your myLane account - myFinances tab!
Getting Books Before the Term
If you have a financial aid offer and are enrolled in at least six (6) credits, you will be eligible to charge up to $500 at the book store, starting the week before the term begins. Some classes and programs have supplies that are more than $500. If you need more money, please visit the financial aid office for assistance.
Your financial aid offer may consist of a mix of grants and loans. The college assumes that you would like the ‘free’ grant money. But, if you want a loan you will need to accept it and complete a few additional steps. When your financial aid offer package is ready we will send you an email to your myLane email with instructions on how to access it.
There are three basic types of financial aid: grants, work study, and loans. Typically, students are offered a combination of these financial aid offers. A FAFSA Submission Summary is a receipt of all the information that you have supplied to the Department of Education. The Department of Education will email you the FAFSA Submission Summary to the email you listed on your FAFSA. It will also tell you if there are any errors that you need to correct. If there are errors, you will need to log in to your FAFSA and make those as soon as possible. If your application was rejected, it will be noted on the summary and Lane will not accept it until it is corrected.
Your FASFA Submission Summary will also give you an estimate of how much financial aid you have been offered. Please be aware that this is merely an estimate and not a financial aid offer letter. You will only receive a financial aid offer when you’ve completed all the steps with Lane Community College.
Even if you don’t have any errors, reviewing your SAR for any typos is a very good idea. It will really help expedite the financial aid process and prevent delays in payments.
After you have been offered your financial aid and you have reviewed your offer letter, you may not have enough money to live on and go to school. In most cases, there are a few things that may be able to help you.
Adjust My Financial Aid Information
Your financial aid is based on your tax information from two years ago. A lot can happen in that time. If your financial situation has changed significantly, then you can petition the financial aid office to consider a more recent tax year. You will need to file a special circumstances appeal, and provide new 1040s and W2s for the requested year. Contact the financial aid office for more information.
Additional Expenses
Not every student has the same expenses. In some cases, we can provide additional funding for childcare, special tools and equipment and/or a laptop computer. Please know that if your additional expenses are approved it will result in an increase in student loans.
Additional Funding
At Lane we do not package Federal Direct Unsubsidized or Federal Parent loans upfront. If you need additional funding student loans can be a great way to cover your expenses. This is a relatively fast way to get additional funding. See our Student Loans section under Watch Your Email for more information on the kinds of loans that may be available to you.
Scholarships can also be a great way to fund your education, but they take a little more work and are not a great solution for immediate need. The typical scholarship cycle is between six and nine months. These are a great long-term strategy! See our Scholarships section below for more information.
About 30% of all FAFSAs are randomly selected for verification. It is a process by which the Department of Education requires Lane Community College to collect and review some additional information. We will send you an email with instructions on how to access and resolve these requirements. Here are some the most common requirements:
Statement of Educational Purpose
As part of the FAFSA verification process, students may be required to complete a Statement of Educational Purpose (SOEP). This form is used to:
- Verify the student’s identity, and
- Confirm that all federal student aid received will be used only for educational expenses.
This requirement helps ensure the accuracy of information submitted on the FAFSA and is mandated by the U.S. Department of Education.
Income Verification Worksheet
As part of the FAFSA verification process, students and their families may be required to submit an Income Verification Worksheet. This form helps confirm the accuracy of income information reported on the FAFSA.
Students may also be asked to submit additional documentation, such as:
- IRS Tax Return Transcripts or a signed copy of the IRS 1040 tax return
- W-2 forms or an IRS Wage and Income Transcript
- Verification of non-filing (if taxes were not filed)
Submitting these documents ensures compliance with federal regulations and helps determine accurate eligibility for financial aid. Processing cannot continue until all required verification materials are received.
If you have been offered a student loan you must first accept the loan in MyLane.
If this is the first time you are taking out a student loan there are a few extra steps that you must complete to access the loan. They only need to be done the first time that you borrow a student loan. Lane Community College exhausts all federal loan options before presenting students with information about private loans.
Entrance Counseling
Entrance counseling is series of webpages and budgeting exercises to help you understand the terms of your loan and what you can expect to repay. You can complete entrance counseling by logging into studentaid.gov with the FSA ID that you used to sign your FAFSA.
Master Promissory Note (MPN)
The master promissory note is the contract that underwrites your student loans. It authorizes the federal government to collect on the loan if you default. It will require you to list several references and is good for any loan you take out in the next ten years. You can complete your MPN by logging into studentaid.gov with the FSA ID that you used to sign your FAFSA.
30 Day Delay
If this is your first time taking out a student loan, be aware that it will be delayed by 30 days. This is a federal requirement for first time borrowers. Please plan ahead so you don’t get caught waiting on a loan that will be late. After your first term, all of your loans will disburse on the standard disbursement schedule. If you have a 1-term loan it must be disburse in 2 payments. (see the disbursement schedule section above).
Exit Counseling
If you take out a loan you are required to complete exit counseling when you leave Lane Community College. Exit counseling will have all the information that you need to be able to manage your loan and have a successful repayment. You can complete exit counseling at studentaid.gov.
