Statement from Lane Community College President Margaret Hamilton regarding the May 19, 2020 election outcome

May 19, 2020 schmidtk

I want to thank every community member who voted in today’s election. I am grateful for every single person in Lane County who took the time to review the ballot, thoughtfully consider all of the candidates and issues, and vote in these abnormal and unusually difficult times. I am grateful that our community saw the value that LCC provides to our local economy and supported our future by passing our bond measure.

As the president of our community’s college, I am especially thankful for the amazing numbers of people who came out to volunteer, endorse, support and vote for LCC’s bond proposal. Special thanks to campaign co-chairs Mandy Jones and Marty Wilde; to the Lane Board of Education; and to the elected officials, community partners, businesses, labor organizations, students, and citizens who have worked tirelessly to pass this bond in the middle of a global pandemic. Not one person gave up on the dream of investing in our college even in these most difficult times and for that, I am forever grateful.

We live in a very different world today than when our board placed this bond on the ballot in December. Even so, the passing of this bond tells me that our community came out to support the critical services that Lane provides to our local area. More than 90% of the students educated at LCC stay right here contributing to our local economy. By passing this bond, this community has made an important investment in the future of LCC. We are in an unprecedented time of uncertainty, job loss and economic impacts that have changed our community tremendously. LCC will be here to help this community as we come out of this difficult time with career technical education, job retraining and two-year transfer degrees. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who supported us. To those voters who couldn’t see their way to voting for this bond because of the uncertainty of the future, we pledge to steward these investments carefully and generate the returns that will help this economy in a real and meaningful way.

LCC is committed to our mission of being the community’s college and we will be here to help with the economic uncertainty Lane County is facing. I have enduring faith in Lane Community College and in this community to work together for the best results. We will adapt, move forward, and help students transform their lives through learning.
