EUGENE, Ore. —The Lane Fire School Open House will be held May 15 as part of a continuing effort to introduce local students to careers and training in wildland fire management.
Now in its fourth year, this annual event brings together high school students from across Lane County who are enrolled in forestry, agriculture, and natural resource programs. Participants take part in hands-on training sessions focused on core firefighting skills, including medical response, water handling, fire line tools, and radio communication and shelter deployment.
The day also introduces students to the history of wildland fire in the Pacific Northwest, including the region’s traditionally tended landscapes. For many, it serves as a first step toward certification and further education in this critical and growing field.
Lane Fire School is a collaborative event supported by Lane Education Service District/CTE, Oregon Department of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon State University, Northwest Youth Corps, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council, Long Tom Watershed Council, and numerous private wildland fire contractors.
Lane Community College educates over 15,000 students annually at six locations across Lane County and online. Students and alumni from all 50 states and 79 countries create more than an $675 million dollar impact on the local economy, helping to support more than 8,900 local jobs. Lane provides affordable, quality, professional technical and college transfer programs; business development and employee training; academic, language and life skills development; and lifelong personal development and enrichment courses.
