Title: From Combat Zones to Advertising Sets
Presenter: Scott Thompson
My career didn’t follow a map. It was a journey driven by grit, a few sharp turns, and the fifty dollars I had in my pocket when I moved to Chicago. Growing up in a small Illinois farming town, I learned a vital lesson from my mother: flaws and unexpected detours aren’t mistakes. They are where the actual story starts.
This sense of open-mindedness and relentless curiosity became the backbone of a thirty-year career that moved from the quiet rhythms of rural life to the front pages of the Chicago Tribune and eventually into the high-pressure world of global advertising. I have always believed that being human is your best marketing strategy. Whether I am directing an advertising film set or leading specialized military combat camera teams for US and NATO partners, I am looking for the authentic connections most people overlook. I operate with a mix of fortitude and empathy, proving that the discipline I learned in the military and the storytelling I did in photojournalism are the exact same tools you need to survive the creative industry.
In my work and this talk, I am pulling back the curtain on how to turn life's messy detours into a professional brand. I don't just take pictures. I build narratives that actually mean something. My mission is to bridge the gap between talent and business, showing the next generation how to build a career that is as scalable as it is soul-driven. Success isn’t about the path you were promised. It is about the wit and tenacity you bring to the turns you actually take.
