Medical Assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public's health and well-being, and requires the mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills. These skills are learned through both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.
Medical Assisting is a rapidly expanding segment of the work force. According to the United States Bureau of Labor statistics, Medical Assisting is projected to be one of the fastest growing professions, and they are in demand in Lane County.
The Medical Assistant Program at Lane Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). The next re-accreditation review and evaluation will occur in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Graduates of this program are eligible to take the national certification examination (CMA), sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Only individuals who hold a certificate from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP are eligible to take the Certification Examination.
Medical Assistant students at Lane should be planning for certification as certification is required for initial employment by local employers. Upon passing the Certification Examination, an MA may claim the credential of CMA (AAMA) for Certified Medical Assistant.
