Voting by Mail in Oregon: How It Works

Curious about how voting by mail operates in Oregon? Watch this video for a detailed explanation. Oregon is renowned for having one of the most voter-friendly systems in the U.S. Registered voters are sent a ballot 2-3 weeks before an election, allowing ample time for research. Completed ballots should be placed in the provided security envelope and then in the ballot return envelope, signed by the voter. These can be mailed (postage-free) or dropped off at an official drop box.

Deadline for Ballot Submission

All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. If you’re mailing it, ensure it's postmarked by Election Day. If you're using a drop box after the Wednesday preceding the election, use an official drop box to guarantee your vote is counted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to register to vote in Oregon?

You are eligible if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • You have an established residential address in Oregon.
  • You are at least 16 years old.

What counts as my residential address?

For students, you have flexibility in selecting your residential address. It could be your family home or your student residence. Keep in mind that Oregon's voting residency requirements differ from in-state tuition residency rules. Your residential address, which you consider home and to which you intend to return, determines the candidates and measures on your ballot. If you're living on campus, make sure to provide your dormitory and room number; a PO Box won't suffice.

What about my mailing address?

Your mailing address is where you'll receive your ballot. It doesn't affect the issues or candidates that will appear on your ballot. Your ballot can be sent to any address worldwide. For instance, you could list your family home as your residential address and use a Titan Court or PO Box for your mailing address.

Can I forward my ballot to a new address?

Remember, Oregon law prohibits the forwarding of ballots. Therefore, each time you move or change your mailing address, you need to update your voter registration. You can easily update your mailing address here.

What if I'm an out-of-state student?

As an out-of-state student, you have options. You can either stay registered at your home address or register using your Oregon school address. You can't do both. To update your registration or request an absentee ballot, contact your home state's election office.

Studying abroad?

If you're studying abroad, update your mailing address through MyVote or get in touch with your county elections department.

Important Reminders

You're allowed to be registered and vote in only one state. Voting in multiple locations is a felony. Also, you can vote only once and in a single county within one state. Consider these points when choosing between your home or school address for voter registration. If you've previously been registered in another state, be sure to cancel that registration when you register in Oregon.
