Throughout the academic year, the Office of Cultures and Belonging, coordinates campus-wide recognition of cultural observances throughout the year. This initiative serves as an educational platform designed to enhance community understanding of underrepresented histories and contemporary socio-cultural dynamics. Through these structured recognitions, the institution reinforces its commitment to inclusive excellence and intercultural education. We invite students, faculty, and staff to join us in these celebrations to foster deeper connection, mutual education, and a shared sense of belonging.

Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15-October 15: Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the diverse histories, cultures, and profound contributions of American citizens with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The timing of this month-long observance intentionally aligns with independence day celebrations across multiple Latin American nations. Because Hispanic Americans represent the largest ethnic minority in the United States, this period provides our college community with an essential opportunity to honor Latino heritage and its deep impact on our society. Join us across campus this month to learn, celebrate, and build community.
October
LGBTQ+ History Month honors the vital contributions, rich histories, and political activism of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender nonconforming, and queer communities. October was chosen nationally to encompass several key milestones, including National Coming Out Day (October 11), Spirit Day in support of LGBTQ+ youth (October 15), and Asexual Awareness Week (late October). Throughout the month, our college community is invited to engage with history, foster inclusion, and celebrate the diverse voices that continue to shape our society. .

Indigenous Peoples & Native American Heritage Month honors the diverse cultures, deep traditions, and resilient histories of Indigenous peoples, recognizing that American history began millennia before European contact. This observance serves as an essential time to celebrate the immense contributions of Native peoples to American development while reflecting honestly on historical injustices. Throughout November, our campus will explore the rich heritage of the 574 federally recognized tribes, celebrate indigenous languages and traditions, and highlight contemporary Native American achievements and experiences. Black History month honors the foundational role of African Americans in U.S. history, expanding from a week-long initiative founded by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. This observance celebrates Black achievements across politics, science, arts, business, and civil rights. From the legacy of enslaved Africans who built the nation's infrastructure to the contemporary Black leaders shaping modern society, our college utilizes February to explore essential histories and contributions often marginalized in standard curricula.

Women’s History Month honors the vital contributions of women across all ethnic and racial backgrounds to American history, culture, and society. Originating as a local celebration in Sonoma County, California, in 1978, it expanded into a national monthly observance in 1987. Throughout March, our campus community examines the legacies of iconic leaders alongside lesser-known women whose transformative impacts deserve recognition and study.

April
Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Month honors the immense contributions and influence of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities on U.S. history and culture. While celebrated nationally in May to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the completion of the transcontinental railroad by Chinese laborers (May 10, 1869), our college observes this heritage month early in April Heritage and Awareness Months for Museums. This ensures our campus community can fully participate in cultural events and educational programming before the spring term concludes.
