Human Services graduate finds her calling at Lane
Mayme Stearns, a Career Pathway Coach with kind eyes and tattoos

Taking that first step was the best decision I've ever made.

For Mayme Stearns, Lane Community College represented a second chance and a new beginning. Inspired initially by her husband's positive experience with Lane's GED program, she overcame her initial fears and embraced the journey, supported by mentors like Aliscia Niles, who saw her potential and encouraged her every step of the way.

"I was nervous, doubting myself at first, but Lane quickly became my community," she said. "Everyone was so supportive and helpful. I went from thinking 'I can't do this,' to realizing I had the strength and intelligence to succeed."

Her experience at Lane was transformative, particularly shaped by her own journey as a domestic violence survivor. Driven by compassion and resilience, she chose to earn a degree in the Human Services program, determined to give back and mentor others through their challenges. Lane not only equipped her with academic knowledge but also provided a cooperative education opportunity that solidified her professional path.

Mayme made an impact on campus, helping fellow students navigate their academic and personal journeys as a student worker in Academic Advising. She was also a proud member of Phi Theta Kappa, Lane's honor society, highlighting her academic achievements and dedication.

Today, Mayme works for Lane’s Career Pathways Department as a Career Coach supporting students as they complete their programs and find success.

"I found my passion at Lane. Initially, I wanted to help kids through DHS [Department of Human Services], but working with Lane students opened my eyes to where my heart truly belongs. Watching students realize their potential and succeed is the greatest reward."

Her story is one of overcoming barriers, finding her voice, and becoming a guiding force for others. "Lane is more than a college; it's a supportive, diverse, and welcoming family. Taking that first step was the best decision I've ever made."
