Memorial Day

Dear LCC Community,

Today we honor those who gave their lives in service to the U.S. military. Memorial Day traces its origins to the aftermath of the Civil War, when communities across the nation began gathering to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. This tradition gave rise to what was then called Decoration Day, designated on May 30 of each year. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the observance to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for gathering and reflection. The change took effect in 1971, when Memorial Day was officially established as a federal holiday.

On Thursday, May 21, the Maxwell Student Veteran Center performed a Memorial Day observance at the Frank Merrill Veterans Memorial Garden behind the Longhouse. All were invited to attend a touching tribute to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives in the U.S. military.

We thank everyone who lost their lives while in the armed forces and mourn their loss. I hope that your weekend has included time for gathering and reflection on this important day.

Stephanie
