PROGRAM

From blood donations to diagnoses, phlebotomists are vital to the healthcare indutsry.

What you’ll learn

Our two-term, non-credit program will prepare you for a rewarding career as a phlebotomy technician and give you the classroom training and clinical practice necessary to prepare you to take the National Phlebotomy Technician PBT (ASCP) board certification exam.

Short-Term Training

Phlebotomists work in hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities drawing blood from patients in preparation for medical testing. Successful phlebotomists must be attentive to detail, work well under pressure, have excellent manual dexterity, great communication skills, and really enjoy working with people. As a phlebotomy technician you are an important member of the clinical laboratory team. New diagnostic techniques, clinical laboratory technology and automated instruments have greatly increased the volume of medical laboratory testing.

2 terms 120 hours

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • Theoretic comprehension of phlebotomy techniques
  • Understanding of associated safety, infection control, quality assurance, documentation, ethical, legal, and customer service issues
  • Learning and practicing blood collection techniques in the classroom
  • Preparation for the National Phlebotomy Technician PBT (ASCP) certification exam and employment in the fields of phlebotomy

AFTER LANE

After completing our Phlebotomy program, you'll be prepared for a productive and rewarding career as phlebotomy technician in the following settings:

  • Medical laboratories
  • Hospitals/Clinics
  • Independent reference laboratories
  • Donor facilities
  • Long-term care facilities
  • Healthcare insurance providers
  • Government laboratories

With additional education and training, you can advance to become a medical laboratory assistant.

Registration

  • Registration for spring term begins March 5, 2024
  • Phlebotomy Part 1 will be offered in spring term 2024.
  • Spring term is from April 1 - June 15, 2024
  • Class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Attendance at the first class session each term is mandatory.

How To Register

  1. Visit ce.lanecc.edu to set up a profile and register for class. If you have already created a profile, go to step 8.
  2. Click "Create a New Profile" and fill out the form.
  3. You must fill in all boxes that have an asterisk.
  4. Your L number is not required.
  5. Use your email address for your username.
  6. Create a password of your choice.
  7. Once your profile has been set up you are ready to register.
  8. Search for a class by clicking "Browse" or "Search."
  9. Add your class to the shopping cart and checkout with a debit or credit card to finalize your registration.

Requirements for American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification Eligibility:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Route 2 - Satisfactory completion of the two-term training and an LCC clinical coop placement, unpaid for a minimum 100 hours in an accredited laboratory.
  • Route 3 - At least one year full time paid employment (35+ hours a week) in an accredited laboratory.
