The Board supports the college’s vision, values and mission, including providing access to higher education for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, age, disability, gender or gender identity. (See BP 3450 Affirmative Action).
The Board is committed to ensuring access to higher education for a diverse student population by providing a welcoming, safe environment as well as college support and assistance to students who represent diverse religious beliefs; students in this country under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which provides a temporary reprieve from deportation for students who were brought to this country as children; and other immigrant students who contribute to Lane’s student diversity.
The board of education supports the continuation of current practices that are in accordance with federal and state law. Any law enforcement or government agent who appears on college property seeking information regarding an individual’s immigration sponsorship and/or status must follow the College online procedure on “Guidance on Responding to On-site Law Enforcement or Government Agency Inquiries Regarding Immigration Sponsorship and/or Status.” No information may be shared with any law enforcement or government agency that appears on campus seeking immigration information until the appropriate approval with specific guidelines is given.
The Board directs the President to ensure that appropriate procedures and employee trainings are in place to protect the safety of immigrant students; and to provide students access to information to help them address concerns related to their immigration status and legal rights.
Any college employee who, while on campus, is asked by a law enforcement or government official presenting valid proof of identification to assist the official in locating a student or students because of the student’s immigration status is required to refer the official to the Public Safety Office (“referral location”). All employees must follow the guidelines set forth in the college online procedure. Once the employee has complied with these guidelines, the employee has no further duty regarding the presence of law enforcement or government agents on campus.
