Spring Conference 2023: Together Towards Tomorrow

Lane Community College is excited to hold the 2023 Spring conference, Together Towards Tomorrow! We gather on Friday, May 5th for camaraderie and renewal. The spring conference theme is inspired by Goal 3 of Board of Education Goals and President’s Priorities, “Strengthening Institutional Culture,” and the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan. During this year’s conference, we reconvene around a collective vision of student success sharing knowledge, ideas, and efforts.

This year, the College is also hosting its first all-staff Violent Actor Training to ensure that our community is resilient in the face of risks and share in mutual responsibility. 

Together we will share renewed energy as we embrace the power of collaboration. Whether attending the dynamic breakout groups planned, playing community table tennis, or taking a walk in our beautiful sustainable spaces, this conference is an opportunity for us to learn from one another and create meaningful connections. Let's work together toward a brighter future tomorrow!

Lunch served: hearty build your own salad. There are plenty of proteins (tofu, turkey, bacon, and hard-boiled eggs), veggies (mixed greens, lettuce, cucumber, black olives), healthy fats (bleu cheese and avocado) and dressings (ranch, honey mustard, bleu cheese, and vegan Greek vinaigrette) and opportunities to avoid allergens. If you liked the salad at Fall In-service, you will LOVE our lunch (and yummy cookies- including gluten-free cookies, as well as lemonade and iced-tea).

A Note on Accessibility:

This year, we have really taken the diverse needs of our community into consideration. Here are a few items for you all keep in mind: 

Firstly, in terms of mobility assistance to and from the Center Building from the Theater and Building 4, Facilities will have a golf cart available. For assistance, please call the facilities office at ext 5000. Secondly, regarding the mandatory violent actor training, please use this google form for all accommodations regarding disability or approved time off. Amanda Blunt will review and provide all those who need accommodations or approved time off a link to attend virtually in real-time and a recording will be provided. Please do so by the end of May 4 close of business. Please fill out this registration form so we can track for FTE. This deeply benefits the college. A recording will also be provided to you after the training. We will have ASL interpretation in the morning during Dr. Bulger’s address as well as the keynote speaker and Q&A. For folks who may need an ASL interpreter during the security training, there is ASL support in the morning during the Violent Actor Training, but not in the afternoon. If your name ends in M-Z, please contact srinivasap@lanecc.edu and will make proper arrangements for you. Secondly, all break out sessions that are in a classroom are zoom accessible. Keynote and Breakout Session Summaries:

Keynote- The Behaviors of Trust by Ms. Jacqueline Olivera

Trust is an essential ingredient for success in any business setting, wherever in the world we may be. With trust, people are more apt to share information, take risks, ask questions, and make suggestions. Without it, the very opposite might just happen. So, if we all need trust to be successful, why is it so elusive?

Today’s keynote addresses the behaviors of trust around the world. We will see that the behaviors that some of us look for may have a very different meaning to someone else. With a willingness to share our own culture and learn from the cultures with which we work, we can increase trust with our coworkers.

Our keynote speaker, Jacqueline Oliveira, shares her experiences and insights from her thirty years as an intercultural consultant and thirteen years in trust-building across cultures. In this interactive presentation, you will explore several of the behaviors of trust across cultures, and consider what trust looks like to you.

About our Speaker: Jacqueline Oliveira, M.A., is the founder of Faeron Communication (faeroncommunication.com), an organization dedicated to building global citizenship through workplace training, education, and mentorship.

Jacqueline has 30 years of national (USA) and international experience as an intercultural consultant. She is a subject matter expert in intercultural communication and intercultural trust. Jacqueline works with multicultural and global groups and teams in companies from a variety of industries. She has consulted with numerous global teams in North America, Northern and Eastern Europe, Asia, and Southeast Asia.

In 2016, Jacqueline was a TEDx presenter at TEDx Cesena, Italy, delivering a talk about building trust across cultures. The title of her talk was, “The Behavior of Trust in the Workplace.”

Jacqueline is adjunct faculty at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, and adjunct faculty at Antioch University, Santa Barbara. She earned her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara and her M.A. in Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT.

Jacqueline lives in Santa Barbara, CA with her husband.

Keynote Breakout Session by Ms. Jacqueline Olivera 

Why is it that we can communicate so comfortably and successfully with some people and with others, it is a mess!? One reason for this is communication styles. In this session, we will explore three speaking styles that exist across cultures. The breakout session culminates with a discussion about the strengths and challenges of each style, and the benefits of all three styles in the multicultural workplace.

Cultural Competency Training by Phil Nash

The concepts of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) are backed by scholarly research and well established in corporate, academic, non-profit and other venues around the world. In this training, participants can choose from either of two zoom training time slots on May 5th to learn the concept of a Cultural Competence Toolkit, and why it is a useful framework for framing discussions and developing EFFECTIVE programs in every institution. This framework assumes that everyone is swimming in a sea of “isms” and that everyone is “wet.” Everyone needs to spend a lifetime continuing to grow in their understanding of cultural competence so that they can be more EFFECTIVE in every aspect of their lives that involves interaction with other people. Then, on May 15th, a 90-minute in-person training will reinforce the concepts discussed on May 5th and help participants apply the concepts to their workplace situations.

Campus Sustainability Walking Tour by Luis Maggiori

We will conduct a campus sustainability walking tour that highlights the main sustainability features of LCC's main campus. The tour will follow the stops in LCC virtual campus sustainability map

The goal is to increase awareness and engagement from LCC staff about what we are currently doing in regards to sustainability, what still needs to be done and how everyone can participate to help meet our sustainability goals Together Towards Tomorrow.

This event is accessible as there will be golf cart access to support folks who may have a disability. 

ATC & ID Services open lab by Kevin Steeves

ATC and IDS will provide an open lab - areas of focus can include accessibility, RSI, Moodle 4, declutter your course, set up midterms & finals, gradebook, or come to discuss course development opportunities. ATC and IDS will be on hand to help support faculty. Open lab would be coordinated with the ATC and IDS in the afternoon of the day and could run alongside other breakout sessions.

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided in the ATC for participants.

Perkins V Info Session by Carla Arciniega

This session will provide information on Perkins V, the current and future Career and Technical Education strategic priorities, information on funding CTE programs of study, and professional development opportunities in the coming biennium.

Portfolio Review Progress, Pilot Project Update and Request for Feedback by Tammie Stark, Patrick Blaine, and Cathy Thomas

In winter 2022, the administration requested IEC to create a recommended process for an institution-wide framework for evaluating the College’s entire portfolio of programs and services. The administration requested development of this framework partly based on accreditor and stakeholder feedback. Feedback suggested that the existing decision-making process for academic and administrative programs and services: lacks transparency in how and why resources are allocated to programs and services; is not based on well-known criteria; and does not provide sufficient opportunities for stakeholder input.

In this session participants will learn:

1) How a “portfolio” is defined, what an institution-wide portfolio review is and what the deliverables include, 2) who is involved, 3) why we are doing this work and how it is related to Lane’s Strategic Plan, 4) where we are in the process and what are the next steps, and 5) what the pilot project data tells us thus far. Participants will then be invited to share feedback in person and via a feedback form as well as ask questions.

Productively moving “Together Towards Tomorrow” is dependent upon communication, collaboration, and transparency. Development and use of portfolio analysis supports these ideals because the framework has been developed by a subcommittee with representation from all employee groups; campus community members have been and are invited to help refine the framework; the deliverables include known criteria and data-informed decision support tool. With this work we aim to strengthen and support communication, collaboration, transparency, and data-informed decision-making.

Container Gardening by Arissa Saliba

This container gardening workshop will offer participants the chance to plant something for spring while getting to interact with coworkers in a relaxed Garden setting. This Workshop would take place in The Learning Garden either in the greenhouse or out in the garden weather depending.

This session will be wheelchair accessible. 

Moodle 4 Summer Launch: Are YOU Prepared? by Rory Beck, Skye Nguyen, Josh Manders

Join us for an in-person session while we present and discuss the changes in Moodle 4 rolling out to our College on July 13-15th, 2023. We’ll provide you resources to help get you prepared and oriented and walk through how to create an Open LMS Academy account to register for a What's New in 4.0 - Teaching and Learning course (which uses Moodle 4!). Significant amount of time will be made available to answer general Moodle 4 questions.

Open play Table Tennis by Alberto Redondo

This activity provides a healthy cognitive way to make new connections and learn new skills. Also have fun while exercising your mind and body. This break out session is accessible to persons with disabilities. 

Megamation-Preventive Maintenance and Work Order Process by Mark Richardson

The session is a review of the CMMS ( Computerized Maintenance Management System) to explain the work order process, building maintenance, and how the FMP maintenance budget is used. This will include a questions and answer session for questions related to work orders, priorities, and small department projects.

Integrated Pest Management: Getting to Zero Pesticide Use with Your Help by Jennifer Hayward

Lane has a detailed Integrated Pest Management Plan that outlines non-chemical protocols for responding to twelve different types of pests. We update the plan every year as we encounter and respond to new situations. Presenters will provide a brief overview of the plan and discuss what attendees can do to help. We will also have a group discussion on ways to improve the plan.
