General Characteristics:
A Student Advisor I is responsible for providing academic advising services to students according to College guidelines; provides personal support to students; coordinates student orientation/training/activities; provides assistance with College policies and procedures; identifies information and referral networks for students including special needs such as child care, sexual assault, domestic violence and Native American/international/multicultural students issues; assists students in solving problems through discussion with appropriate College staff, referral to a counselor or an advisor, to an appeals procedure or to an outside resource agency; develops and maintains database files and participant tracking and reporting systems; may provide support to a manager in developing, scheduling and coordinating new and repeat courses at Cottage Grove Center; does related work as required. Work requires judgment, organizational skills and excellent communication skills to conduct group presentations and to determine students' needs and respond appropriately with academic advice and/or personal problem solving assistance. Working conditions may involve exposure to emotionally unstable individuals and require interpersonal skill to calm the individual until assistance is available. Operating microcomputers and other office equipment requires manual dexterity and good visual acuity. Positions may require the ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Examples of Work:
Provides initial contact, referral and follow up for students in crisis; interviews students and helps them to identify their needs; calms and consoles students who are very upset; provides appropriate problem solving and referral for alcohol and drug abuse issues, food and shelter issues, degree requirements, financial aid issues, substitution of courses and community or College resources in mental health, health care, transportation and crisis intervention; maintains information on campus and, community resources.

Coordinates selection of training materials and presents orientation sessions for new and returning students; selects materials and trains additional staff in orientation presentations; maintains manuals of current student services procedures and College policies for counseling staff; leads resource groups for students; explains student rights and responsibilities.

Instructs students in registration procedures and College policies/procedures; advises applicants and clients about the enrollment process, program services and required documentation; clarifies program information and confirms eligibility status; verifies participant enrollment; determines and arranges for appropriate services and accommodations for the disabled students; coordinates special services such as sign language interpreters, note takers and mobility aides.

Provides child care referrals to subscribing parents; provides educational support and information to parents concerning characteristics of quality child care, child care subsidy programs and tax credits, child development and other community resources for parents; provides technical support to child care providers.

Produces newsletters; develops publicity material and displays for presentations and special events; plans and conducts fund raising; maintains resource lending library by selecting books and monitoring lending procedures; develops recommendations for program or department budget; tracks budget expenditures and/or participants to be served; coordinates intake process for program agencies; creates procedures for interacting smoothly in student/client intake and completion of all necessary forms for State reports; develops brochures and reports on special programs.

Provides instructional program information to students; meets with students who have clearly identified educational goals and assists them in following published or individual academic plans and in selecting classes; provides general information to students and staff concerning College policies and procedures, degree and program requirements, resources available, counseling schedules and student orientation.

Provides advising and personal support services to international and Native American students; assists students in planning and implementing programs, training and cultural activities; acts as a resource person to staff on issues related to Native American or international students; represents College on statewide Native American Student Coalition; recruits and screens families and develops support networks for international students.

Assists students in resolving problems through interpretation an clarification of procedures, rules and regulations; develops acceptable solutions through existing College appeal procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of campus and community resources; knowledge of College programs, structure, policies and information sources; knowledge of and skill in operating office equipment including typewriter, copier, microcomputer, database and wordprocessing software, audiovisual. equipment, calculator and microfiche reader; knowledge of LCC academic programs, special certification, cooperative work experience vocational rehabilitation, training and credit transfer programs; knowledge of local child care resources and their availability, as required by the position; knowledge of budget development and monitoring, as required by the position; knowledge of other cultures, as required by the position; knowledge of applicable State and federal program regulations; skill in fundraising and program marketing, as required by the position; ability to apply the knowledge of programs to students' situations and to provide students with accurate advice and appropriate referral; ability to use active listening techniques; ability to communicate information to individuals from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, on a one-to-one or group basis; ability to be flexible in finding solutions to problems; ability to develop, schedule and coordinate courses, as required by the position; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work independently and as a part of a team; ability to maintain network of resources, information files and library of resource materials; ability to develop training materials/newsletters/brochures and conduct group presentations; skill in working under stress; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; skill in human relations and the assessment of the severity of individual's emotional state; skill in problem solving and negotiation of compromises; ability to gather and organize data; ability to calculate and report descriptive statistics; ability to contact and work with community agencies, volunteers and families; ability to drive, as required by the position; ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as required by the position; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of a division/department chair or other supervisor. A lead worker may be available to assign tasks, provide priorities, train and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Work is performed independently according to knowledge of College and departmental policies and procedures. The supervisor is available for consultation on difficult student problems, crisis intervention, budget or personnel issues. Work is reviewed for the quality of services provided to students.

This position may have responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities, train and monitor the work of student assistants, office support staff, hourly employees and/or volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:
One year of post-secondary education with course work in counseling, human resources, psychology or a related field is required. Two years of related experience in counseling, student advising, student activities, women's programs or a related field is required. This experience should be at the level of an Assessment/Testing Specialist. Experience in a community college setting is preferred. A current Oregon driver's license is required for some positions.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
