General Characteristics:
A Painter is responsible for journey level performance in maintaining, protecting, preserving, decorating and painting the interior and exterior painted surfaces of all campus buildings, structures, equipment and furnishings; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and carry ladders, hand tools and painting equipment and to work on ladders, scaffolding and knees. Working conditions include standing for extended periods of time, working at heights and exposure to hazardous substances.

Examples of Work:
Prepares surfaces for painting by cleaning, vacuuming, sanding, patching and repairing them; protects surfaces and objects near painting projects by covering, protecting and masking them; brushes, rolls and sprays paint onto interior areas such as walls, ceilings, windows and trim; mixes paint colors to match existing paint or desired effects.

Pressure washes, prepares and protects exterior surfaces; brushes, rolls and sprays paint onto exterior areas such as walls, siding, curbs, parking lots, overhead beams, doors and windows; operates forklifts, boom and scissor lifts, vans and trucks; uses ladders and scaffolding to reach higher portions of structures; cleans up debris and painting equipment; maintains equipment and rebuilds it as necessary.

Finishes and refinishes wood and metal by stripping, sanding, washing, gluing, filling, patching, repairing, staining, blending colors, sealing, lacquering, varnishing and painting them.

Installs patches, repairs, muds, tapes, finishes, plasters, textures and applies sand finish to plaster, drywall and similar materials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic paint and color theory; knowledge of and skill in all phases of painting, painting equipment, surface preparation and drywall finishing; knowledge of and skill in the operation and maintenance of conventional and airless sprayers, brushes, rollers, pressure washers, texture guns, stripping machines and assorted hand tools; ability to operate a forklift, boom and scissor lifts; ability to use ladders and scaffolding safely; ability to drive a van and truck; knowledge of and skill in applying occupational safety precautions and practices; ability to read, understand and follow blueprints, sketches, technical instructions, work orders and other instructions and directions; ability to work independently on assigned tasks with a minimum of technical supervision; ability to communicate effectively orally; ability to stand for extended periods; ability to work at heights of over 50 feet; ability to lift and carry ladders, hand tools and painting equipment weighing up to 100 pounds and to work on knees; ability to use respiratory protection equipment; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Facilities Management and Planning. A Lead Painter schedules, assigns, inspects and approves work and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Assignments are received daily in the form of job orders or oral and written instructions.

After a brief orientation period, work is performed independently. Work is reviewed periodically during and after completion of work for quality, quantity and safety.,

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position; however, this position may plan, assign, approve, instruct, set priorities and schedule the work of student assistants and hourly employees.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Three years of experience at a journey level is required. This experience should include all aspects of maintaining, protecting, preserving, decorating and painting interior and exterior painted surfaces of buildings, structures, equipment and furnishings. A current Oregon driver's license is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
