General Characteristics:
A KLCC Program Host is responsible for preparing for and conducting on-air programs in one or more program areas such as music, news or informational interviews; operates and adjusts on-air equipment, prepares promotional materials and writes scripts; does related work as required. Operating on-air broadcast equipment requires manual dexterity. Light lifting is required to move stacks of CDs or tapes. Working conditions include working in a cramped area.

Examples of Work:
Gathers and broadcasts information, news and weather; conducts international, national, regional and local newscasts using network and local sources; monitors and rewrites syndicated news reports and other stories; compiles, edits and writes newscasts and editorial material; covers breaking and ongoing news stories; records network programs.

Arranges and conducts phone and live interviews with news makers and community leaders; arranges and conducts daily access interviews; edits interviews; conducts call-in show.

Selects, plays and announces on-air music selections; records network tapes; reads announcements; stays current with changing musical trends and types of music.

Produces promotional material by writing script, reading and recording script, selecting music and mixing onto cartridge tape for on-air use.

Participates in on-air fundraising.

Generates story ideas; gathers initial information; researches topics and issues of importance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skill in applying on-air broadcasting techniques; knowledge of and skill in the operation of on-air equipment; knowledge of music trends and/or current events as required by the position; knowledge of and skill in the application of FCC rules; ability to operate audio-production equipment such as tape-editing machines; ability to conduct informative interviews as required by the position; ability to speak clearly in a well-modulated voice; skill in the operation of a microcomputer and typewriter; ability to think quickly; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to use word processing to compose or edit materials for broadcast; ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines; ability to lead and train students and volunteers; ability to perform light lifting and work in a cramped area; ability to work varied shifts and/or weekends; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the KLCC-FM Station Manager. A Lead KLCC Program Host is available to assign work, provide work priorities and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Preparatory and on-air work is performed independently in conformance with FCC regulations and the policies and procedures of the Station using prior experience and/or training. General instructions are given on Station format and operation when first employed with subsequent instructions on programming received from the station manager or program coordinator. Performance is reviewed for the quality of work on and off the air.

This position has responsibility for the daily assignment of work, establishing work priorities, monitoring of duties and training of students and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by course work or training in communications, broadcast journalism, broadcasting, FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcasting and station operations and the use of audio-production equipment is required. one year of on-air experience is required. A current FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
