Where Imagination Takes Form

Arts Division

Ready for Hip Hop? Think you might want to try a new personality on stage? Did you ever want to learn the mastery of color, create your own coffee mug, or build a life-size chess set? Have you ever wondered how to use a synthesizer or how audio engineering works? What would it be like to design a video game, create a movie, or layout a magazine or webpage? Cast glass or bronze, etch into a metal sheet, play a guitar or become a concert violinist, draw the human figure, connect art and nature, or experience a dance performance? What does that old blues have to do with the Beatles? What was Japanese art like before anime? What is it to integrate mind, spirit, and body into a unique expression of individual creativity and learning?

Our expert, passionate and supportive faculty will guide you along a path toward achieving your career or personal goals in our creative disciplines, and provide a quality learning experience in a caring environment. Whether you are a novice, an experienced amateur, or a seasoned professional, Lane’s artistic disciplines offer unique and exciting arts experiences that enhance intelligence, creativity and the quality of life in ways that enrich both personal and academic experience.

New or continuing students can focus on transfer credits in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Media Arts and other related fields, prepare for a future career through multiple certificate programs, such as Graphic Design or Music Production, enroll in courses as an elective, or experience art courses as a unique aspect of personal and/or professional growth. We offer a significant number of traditional lecture, history, studio and performance based courses in multiple time slots throughout the day, as well as distance learning and evening courses.

Our faculty are experts in their respective disciplines and work as practicing professionals, performers and artists in their own right. Faculty across the division exhibit, offer presentations and workshops, and perform in regional, national and international venues, colleges and galleries.

The Arts Department supports and manifests the college’s mission of transforming lives through learning. We value a culture of accessibility and inclusivity, academic excellence, and individual student achievement. The arts courses at Lane provide students with the opportunity to engage in Lane’s Institutional Learning Outcomes of Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and Applied Learning. Each course will engage students in technical, historical and cultural components that are current and relevant in the 21st century, yet grounded in the diversity of human history.

The aim of art is not to represent the outward appearance of things, but their
inward significance.

In the Arts - Student Success Story

The Oregon Country Fair poster is as much of an institution as the Fair itself. Around May each year, the OCF poster committee reveals the winning design and, like a harbinger of summer, it becomes increasingly ubiquitous, pinned to bulletin boards and taped to storefronts around the region.

Artist Ila Rose had submitted work to the committee in the past, to no avail. This year, she nabbed the commission — in a year that, according to the poster committee, had a record-breaking number of submissions.
