EUGENE, Ore. – A collaboration with the 20x21 EUG Mural Project brings Nepali street artist H11235 to the Lane Community College campus at the end of August for the completion of a piece inspired by the college’s mission to transform lives through learning.

The artist, H11235, (Kiran Maharjan) extended his visit to Eugene following his contribution to the 20x21 EUG Mural Project, a public art initiative to paint 20 or more outdoor murals in advance of the 2021 IAAF World Championships.

The public is invited to an artist talk and mural viewing at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Mary Spilde Center, 101 W. 10th Street, Eugene.

“Kiran’s presence on campus allows students the opportunity to experience an artist of international notoriety, view his style and technique and inquire about his process,” said Ellen Osterkamp, an art history faculty member and chair of the Art on Campus Committee that worked with partners to extend Maharjan’s visit. “We are looking forward to sharing Kiran’s mural with the campus and community and believe that it will reflect Lane’s continued mission to be the community’s college through his diverse and multicultural approach.”

The mural is called, “Gyan,” a Nepali word meaning knowledge, and the word is written on the work in Ranjana lipi, a traditional script of the Newari ethnic group. The piece is symbolic of growth and intellectual development – a visual representation of the college's mission, Maharjan said. "We as humans have biologically evolved and there is an intellectual evolution going on that pushes us forward," he said.

The mural will also be on view for the Spilde Center open house planned from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 as part First Friday ArtWalk festivities. Lane’s Art on Campus Committee, Arts Division and the Foundation’s Roberta Konnie Endowment Fund supported the artist’s work with support from the City of Eugene’s Cultural Services Department, 20x21 EUG Mural Project and the Eugene-Kathmandu Sister City Association.
