EUGENE, Ore. - The Lane Community College Art Gallery will host a closing reception for artist Kathryn Finnerty on Thursday, April 27, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the gallery, Building 11, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave. in Eugene. Finnerty’s solo exhibition, “A Place: Landscape, Memory, Belonging,” opened April 3.
Finnerty is a full-time ceramics instructor at Lane. The exhibition features work that is reflective of Kathryn’s recent sabbatical.
Artist Statement: “The body of work in this exhibition was created during a sabbatical taken January through June in 2016. I did two residencies during my sabbatical; the first was at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis where I did a two month McKnight Residency followed by two months in the mountains at the Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta, Canada.
The work I did during this time represents a departure from my previous approach to making both in scale and form. The experience was challenging and inspiring on several levels, and at the end of my residencies, rather than finding answers and forming a conclusion, I discovered a beginning and a path forward.
“Using landscape as both a frame and lens, I sought to explore my emotional, and physical connection to places I have inhabited. Place attachment and meaning are the person-to-place bonds that evolve through emotional connection, meaning, and understandings of a particular place and features of a place. Part of my creative process has always been about examining feelings of restlessness in a search for a sense of belonging. I was born in Canada and am an immigrant to this country, the child of immigrants to Canada from the UK, and the grandchild of immigrants from Ireland to the UK. I believe that it is no coincidence that I have a long-standing and deeply enduring need to search for a sense of authentic attachment and belonging to a place.
“Previous work revealed small, intimate representational depictions of landscapes drawn onto the surface of my vessels. During my residencies, I explored ideas of the non- pictorial landscape narrative, increased scale and ideas using abstracted outlines of landscapes to define the form and structure of my pieces.”
