EUGENE, Ore.—The Bleed, a Lane Community College student magazine, has won a national Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press. The Bleed also won third place in the Best of Show competition.

The Torch, a Lane Community College student newspaper, was named as a finalist for the award.

ACP considers its awards among the most prestigious in collegiate journalism.

The Bleed is an annual 52-page trade publication produced by Lane graphic design students. It was one of 22 finalists for the Magazine Pacemaker Award from among 96 entries. Of the finalists, 18 were universities. Entries were judged on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics.

“We are overwhelmed and overjoyed to have gotten the award,” said graphic design instructor Tom Madison. Students have published the magazine for the past seven years.

The Torch student newspaper was a finalist for the Newspaper Pacemaker Award. The Torch publishes weekly during the academic year including an online edition and about 2,000 print copies. “The Torch staff couldn't be more proud to have been named as a finalist,” said student advisor Charlie Deitz. “This is the most prestigious student news prize in the country, sometimes referred to as the ‘Pulitzer’ of student journalism.” The Torch won Best of Show at ACP’s winter competition in February, putting it in the running for a Pacemaker. It was one of 30 finalists selected from 150 entries competing with schools such as UCLA, Duke and Yale. “This is the best The Torch has fared in this contest in its more than 50-year history,” said Deitz.

The Pacemaker Award winners were announced at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. last month. Lane students who attended had an opportunity to hear keynote speakers Donna Brazile, Bob Woodward, Jose Antonio Vargas, and Edward Snowden.
