Four LCC instructors receive grants for OER

image of OER logoEUGENE, Ore. — Four instructors at Lane Community College have received 2016-17 grants from Open Oregon to adopt or develop and implement OER (open educational resources) at Lane in the coming year.

In a March 15 announcement, Open Oregon said, “Taken together, the projects represent collaborations with 15 different institutions that have the potential to save over 7,000 Oregon students an estimated $1,142,624 in the pilot year of the program. This represents an impact of over $5 in savings for each $1 of grant money spent. Beyond the pilot phase it is expected that these fully accessible and openly licensed course materials will be used even more widely and increase the student savings impact.”

Lane will receive $16,000 in grant funds for the following projects:

Jennifer von Ammon, English – to adopt the OER textbook “Writing for Success” by Scott McLean for her WR115 classes.

Tom Burton, Media Arts, and Meredith Keene-Wilson, Graphic Design and Media Arts – to revise and remix elements from multiple sources for Art 216, including digital design tools and graphic arts technology models.

Alise Lamoreaux, ABSE and GED – to author a textbook for transitioning to college for non-traditional students that will focus on the “college knowledge” and contextual skills needed to understand college and be a successful college student.

Teryk Morris, Advanced Technology, with Peter Lauf, Lane ESD – development of an educational DRO (Digital Readout) that instructors can use to create easily sharable projects for students training in manufacturing and fabrication.

The 2016-17 Open Oregon grants were sponsored by the Oregon Community College Distance Learning Association and administered by Amy Hofer at Open Oregon. For more information, see the Open Oregon grants announcement online at  http://openoregon.org/2016-17-oer-grants-awarded.
