Trickster Chronicles: "Jesus Cottontail" and "Between Here and Emptiness" Opens February 18

Birth of JC by Christian HargerEUGENE, OR – The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present joint exhibitions, Trickster Chronicles: Jesus Cottontail, by artist Christian Harger and Between Here and Emptiness by artist Michael Boonstra.

Christian Harger and Michael Boonstra are both faculty within the Department of Art and Applied Design, at Lane Community College. Both work various mediums with Christian specializing in printmaking and Michael specializing in sculpture and mixed media, with this exhibition primarily focusing on photography and drawing.

Michael states, "I am interested in how we approach and relate to the landscape, both visually and psychologically, and how that relationship is changing as our perspective moves from a horizon based view to an aerial view. The cultural modes of describing and mapping environments blends with my own psychological associations, relationships to materials and their history...The resulting works take on various forms, many referring to environments I have experienced and have developed relationships to over time, while others interface with places I am experiencing in the present in which environmental phenomena dictate the work that is created."

Christian feels, "My artwork is an attempt in to participate in the titillating stories I grew up with. I reference and honor mythology, fables, and fairy tales, etc., while subverting them with cheeky reboots. I aim to skew the original intention of these narratives. Visual clarity is countered with vagueness. Gravitas is neutralized by bright colors... I believe that this revamping can generate new anecdotes, new archetypes, and new emotional impact."

Spending Time in Places I’ve Never Been by Michael BoonstraThe show runs from February 18 to March 13 with an artist lecture and reception on Wednesday, February 26 at 3:00 pm. The gallery is located in building 11 on the main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission. The Art and Applied Design Department phone number is 541-463-5409.
