General Characteristics:
A Technical/Scene Shop Coordinator is responsible for the scheduling/ building of scenery designs, lighting and sound systems for the department's play productions, music and dance concerts, stage presentations and all other events held in the performing arts building; works with the Scenic/Lighting Designer to establish budgets and monitor and control expenditures for each production event; responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of all stage and shop equipment; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift, move, shift and carry scenery, lighting instruments, stage properties, draperies and other stage equipment. Positions require the ability to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends.

Examples of Work:
Works with Scenic/Lighting Designer to establish budgets for each event; monitors and controls expenditures; works with designer in recruiting and guiding students and volunteers working on scenery lighting and sound throughout the production process.

Draws working plans from the designer's plans and sketches; constructs, assembles, rigs, shifts, maintains and repairs scenery; implements lighting and sound designs; rents, purchases, obtains quotes, prepares purchase orders and arranges for shipping, pick up and delivery of goods and products to be used.

Establishes, in consultation with the designer and director, schedules for activities and performs work to meet deadlines; participates in production meetings.

Maintains the safe, orderly and clean condition of the shop and other work areas on a daily basis; maintains, safeguards and stores tools and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skill in the methods, tools, materials (such as cloth goods, steel, plastics, wood, plaster and line goods) and fabrication process used in stage productions of all kinds; knowledge of and skill in electricity, stage lighting, sound, stage rigging and stage structures; knowledge of and skill in training and monitoring performance of students and volunteers; ability to plan work assignments and set priorities; ability to build stage scenery according to plans, sketches or verbal descriptions; ability to work under pressure and meet tight dead- lines; ability to operate tools and equipment safely; ability to work effectively with other members of the production team, students, and other College and community people; ability to estimate the amount and kind of materials used to construct scenery; ability to estimate costs, develop accurate budgets and complete required work within the budget; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to organize and plan work so that commitments and deadlines are met; knowledge of theatrical hardware and supplies; ability to operate such tools as saws, jointers, wire welders and various other electric hand tools; ability to use and perform basic maintenance on power tools; skill in the use of a microcomputer; knowledge of and skill in the use of technical theatre applications of computers, including a fully computerized lighting system and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), wordprocessing, spreadsheet and project scheduling software; ability to keep accurate records; ability to lift, move, shift and carry scenery, lighting instruments, stage properties, draperies and other stage equipment; ability to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Arts Division Chair. Work is performed independently according to professional practices in cooperation and collaboration with the production team of any given event. Work performance is reviewed by talking to other members of production teams, visual appearance of stage sets and lighting and effectiveness of sound systems.

This position coordinates and leads the work of student assistants and volunteers. This position plans work, assigns tasks, provides priorities, trains and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree with course work or training in theatre, theatre technology, and the various arts, crafts, trades and processes employed in the position is required. Three years of technical theatre experience is required. This experience should include building scenery and properties and operating lighting and sound systems.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
