STUDENT EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST

General Characteristics:
A Student Employment Specialist is responsible for providing job placement assistance to job seekers and employers; assists applicants in job search methods; does related work as required. Work requires excellent communication skills to place clients in suitable employment and to determine the hiring needs of employers.

Examples of Work:
Interviews and registers job applicants; explains services offered by the Office; advises applicants of job search methods and resources; refers applicants to social agencies/organizations, as needed; assists clients in working through feelings of frustration; provides job information to callers over the phone.

Pre-screens and refers applicants to job openings consistent with qualifications, preferences and needs; enters referral data on the computer.

Interviews employers to obtain information on job openings and to revise and adjust job order information, as needed; records and codes job listings from employers; contacts employers weekly to verify status of job openings and to collect hire information when the position is filled by a referred job applicant; maintains a file of jobs placed on hold and follows up with employers for closure information; explains services offered by the office; enters data on the computer.

Schedules interview appointments for campus recruiters; takes applications from interested applicants.

Greets clients, ascertains needs and refers client to appropriate person; answers phone, ascertains needs and refers caller to appropriate person; answers general questions about the services offered by the office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the procedures used to contact employers about job openings and services available, and place people in jobs; knowledge of employment or personnel office functions; knowledge of effective job search techniques; working knowledge of automated employment systems; skill in the use of interviewing techniques; skill in the operation of a microcomputer and the use of spreadsheet and database software; ability to match people's skills with jobs for a mutually satisfactory employer-employee relationship; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, employers and the public; ability to make effective presentations; ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations; ability to use active listening techniques to assist clients in working through feelings; ability to organize and prioritize work; ability to type; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the Job Placement Assistant Director. A Student Employment Coordinator assigns work, provides work priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Work is performed independently using a knowledge of federal, State and institutional rules, regulations, policies, procedures and interpretations. A procedures manual is available for reference. Work is reviewed by observation and feedback from students and employers.

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. One year of experience in employment, placement or a related field which provides a knowledge of contacting local employers about job openings, assessing work histories and skills, and placing people in jobs is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
