General Characteristics:
A Production Copier Operator is responsible for producing a large volume of duplicated material accurately to specifications on deadline; operates and maintains high volume copiers; organizes, prioritizes and evaluates the most cost-effective way of processing a large volume of work orders on a daily basis; performs quality control by proofing and editing; does related work as required. Work requires well-developed verbal skills to consult with and advise Printing/Graphics customers on technical details relating to preparing copy for printing, binding, paper type and timelines and to exchange technical information with staff, vendors and service technicians. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and carry boxes of paper. Running programmable copiers requires good visual acuity and eye-hand coordination. Working conditions include standing for long periods of time, frequent exposure to noise and occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Examples of Work:
Organizes, prioritizes and schedules incoming work orders by assessing due dates and tasks to be coordinated with other department employees; double checks accuracy of work orders; prices quick copy work orders, if necessary; evaluates the most cost-effective use of the equipment; assists and advises customers in preparing printed materials to assure optimal results; records and evaluates production volume information through daily and monthly logs.

Operates two programmable production copiers simultaneously to produce duplicated materials for departments; prepares original copy and programs custom applications for duplicating jobs; operates paper jogger, paper drill, staplers, programmable paper cutter and binding equipment.

Performs quality control by checking on copies produced, editing and preparing camera-ready copy; makes preliminary press checks and spot checks during run.

Monitors electronic function displays on duplicator equipment and makes adjustments or repairs in consultation with service representatives; communicates technical problems to service reps and determines if they should be called in for repairs; performs basic maintenance on equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of printing and graphics processes; knowledge of xerographic process; knowledge of print production set-up; ability to prepare camera ready copy for production; ability to interpret work orders and quickly determine the best method of production; ability to program and manipulate copiers to produce a job in a certain way; ability to make quality checks on output and adjust malfunctions on equipment; ability to set and adjust multiple priorities and work independently; ability to work effectively under pressure, with frequent interruptions and dead- lines; ability to visualize, plan and produce complex printed projects according to client specifications and expectations; ability to anticipate and solve problems; skill in proofing and editing; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to operate programmable production copier, paper drill, programmable paper cutter, paper jogger, electric stapler and flexbinding equipment; ability to work quickly and accurately; good mechanical ability for making adjustments and repairs; ability to lift and carry boxes of paper weighing up to 55 pounds; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Printing/Graphics Manager. After an initial training period, work is performed independently according to printing/graphics policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by the supervisor through results obtained and customer satisfaction.

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position; however, this position may have responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities, train and monitor the work of student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by course work in graphics, visual communications or a related field is required. one year of experience which included public contact, proofing and preparing camera-ready copy, operating a programmable production copier and planning workflow is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
