General Characteristics:
A Lead Carpenter is responsible for leading and coordinating the work of Carpenter positions in the maintenance of wood and concrete structures in College facilities and the completion of remodeling and construction projects; insures that assigned duties are completed on schedule and are done well; schedules and assigns all work; responsible for all supplies and materials; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and carry ladders, power and hand tools and carpentry equipment.and to work on ladders, scaffolding and knees. Working conditions include standing for extended periods of time, working at heights and potential exposure to hazardous substances. Positions require the ability to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response.

Examples of Work:
Coordinates the day-to-day operation of the woodshop; schedules work order completion and projects; monitors the quality of work performed by carpenters and assures timely completion of assignments; trains carpentry staff.

Orders all supplies and materials; acquires quotes and bids from outside contractors; inventories and prepares supplies and equipment; prepares budget estimates for needed supplies and equipment; maintains carpentry equipment; maintains system for processing and filing invoices, orders, work in process, completed work and pending work.

Lays out and estimates the cost of construction; frames with wood and steel studs; installs insulation and sheetrock/drywall; builds and installs doors, windows and office partitions; builds forms and mixes and pours concrete walkways, ramps, loading docks, steps and retaining walls; sets tiles; constructs roofs.

Repairs roofs and roof leaks; repairs wood, steel and concrete structures on interior and exterior of campus buildings.

Repairs carpet, vinyl flooring, formica and drywall; replaces glass; installs suspended ceilings.

Determines cabinet, shelving and other space organization needs of staff; develops plans, constructs, repairs, remodels and installs shelving, furniture, cabinets, desk tables, chalk and bulletin boards, file cabinets and wall partitions; finishes interior surface trim, baseboards and window/door frames.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to plan work assignments and set priorities; skill in training and monitoring performance of staff; ability to maintain carpentry equipment; ability to maintain files; ability to prepare budget estimates; knowledge of and skill in all phases of carpentry and cabinet making; ability to read, understand and follow blueprints, technical diagrams, work orders and other instructions and directions; knowledge of and skill in the operation and maintenance of all power and hand tools used in cabinet making, general and finish carpentry, concrete work and roofing repair; ability to prepare cost estimates; ability to design and draw working plans for cabinets and shelving; ability to operate a forklift, bobcat and front-end loader; ability to use ladders and scaffolding safely; ability to drive a van and truck; knowledge of and skill in tile setting, roofing construction and repair, furniture construction and concrete and steel construction; knowledge of and skill in applying occupational safety precautions and practices; ability to work independently on assigned tasks with a minimum of technical supervision; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to stand for extended periods; ability to work at heights of over 50 feet; ability to lift and carry ladders, power and hand tools and carpentry equipment weighing up to l00 pounds and to work on knees; ability to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Facilities Management and Planning. Work is performed independently according to established procedures and applicable state and federal regulations. General instructions as to the scope of work and priorities are provided by the supervisor.

Employee is responsible for daily operations with the supervisor available to consult on problems and policy decisions.

This position coordinates and leads the work of Carpenter positions, hourly employees and student assistants. This position plans work, assigns tasks, trains, provides priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Four years of experience at a journey level is required. This experience should include the full range of activities performed by this position as well as some responsibility for scheduling and monitoring the completion of projects, ordering supplies and materials and maintaining carpentry equipment. A current Oregon driver's license is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
