General Characteristics:
An Electronic Publishing Technician is responsible for providing high quality typesetting skills to College staff; produces both small and large documents in a timely, efficient and professional manner; uses several software programs; responsible for system management; does related work as required. work requires well-developed verbal skills to present and exchange technical or complex information. Work requires exceptional editing, grammar, punctuation, proofing, writing and spelling skills and close attention to detail. Typesetting and monitoring quality of images requires manual dexterity and good visual acuity.

Examples of Work:
Operates a computer on departmental network using several software programs; constructs complex documents using intricate page layout design software for instructional and administrative use, including copy preparation, copyfitting, type specification, advising customers on format issues, proofing and revising work, and providing simple mock-ups for customer proofing; receives/sends files to other computers and mainframe using modem.

Prioritizes jobs and keeps a detailed log of time and materials for billing purposes.

Manages system, ensuring that the departmental network works properly using the most current operating system; installs the latest software updates; installs virus protection; assures that purging and proper file management is carried out and back-up is done on a regular basis; troubleshoots system errors; implements software update capabilities; maintains detailed files on all software for update information.

Researches and recommends software and hardware pertinent to departmental operation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of communication processes using modem to both small computers and large mainframe; ability to keyboard quickly and accurately; ability to produce high quality work under pressure, with frequent interruptions; ability to work well with others; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; knowledge of printing and graphics processes; knowledge of copyfitting and design; knowledge of and skill in copy preparation; knowledge of a production-oriented area; skill in editing, grammar, punctuation, proofing and spelling; ability to organize work; ability to perform work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; knowledge of equipment operated and software used; ability to effectively plan and manage a large project; ability to operate a programmable paper cutter and miscellaneous bindery equipment; ability to operate rapid access processor, laser image setter, daylight camera and silver recovery system; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Printing/Graphics Manager. After an initial training period, work is performed independently according to printing/graphics policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by the supervisor through results obtained and customer satisfaction. Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
An associate degree in graphics technology, visual communications, graphic communication or a related field is required. Two years of related hardware, software and computer applications providing high quality typesetting to produce both small and large documents is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
