Purpose of Classification:

Responsible for journey level performance in installing, maintaining, repairing and removal of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures in College facilities. Work is performed in accordance with the College’s mission, vision, and core values.

Essential Functions:

Installs and maintains electrical switches, cords and outlets; repairs lights, timers, fire/smoke detectors, electrical fixtures, motors and switch gears; installs and maintains electrical fixtures and equipment; diagnoses causes of electrical outages and interruptions; repairs electrical systems.

Installs wiring for the master clock, fire alarm, telephone, computer network and HVAC control systems; installs and maintains wiring for sprinkler control, emergency and exit control lights and associated power control circuits.

Installs and/or removes electrically operated equipment including motors, heaters, lab equipment, welders, light fixtures, power outlets, standby generators and associated switching devices, overhead doors, overhead hoists, circulating/sump/sewage pumps and power control devices.

Maintains and repairs master clock system, fire alarm systems, electric boilers, gas kilns and ovens, kitchen equipment, temperature control system and other electrical appliances.

Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, cleans and repairs elements of the power distribution system.

Assists in the maintenance, repair and computer programming of the HVAC systems.

Auxiliary Functions:

Work is performed within the applicable College and departmental policies, procedures, and priorities.

May perform as a HVAC Technician during an absence. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation or equivalent is required. Three years of experience at a journey level is required. At least two years of this experience must include work in maintenance, new construction and electrical troubleshooting. A current Oregon driver's license is required. A current Oregon General Journeyman Electrician License is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of local and national electrical codes and standard electrical procedures.

Knowledge of and skill in: all phases of electrical installation and repair; the operation of all electrical tools and test equipment used in electrical installation and repair; applying occupational safety precautions and practices.

Ability to: analyze and troubleshoot problems with electrical systems; read, understand and follow blueprints, wiring diagrams, technical instructions, work orders and other instructions and directions; operate a forklift, boom and scissor lifts; use ladders safely; drive a van and truck; work independently on assigned tasks with a minimum of technical supervision; communicate effectively and respectfully, and work productively with others; work in a participative environment; stay in a stationary position for extended periods; work at heights of over 50 feet and overhead; transport ladders, power and hand tools and electrical equipment, such as fixtures and rolls of wire, weighing up to 100 pounds; perform work close to the floor; work in inclement weather; be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response; work safely in operating equipment and/or performing duties to prevent injury to self and others.

Physical Demands:

While performing the essential functions of these positions, the employee is required to transport ladders, power and hand tools, and electrical equipment, such as fixtures and rolls of wire, to stay in a stationary position for extended periods of time, and to work on ladders and close to the floor; occasionally transports equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Electrician work requires concentrated mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions include working at heights and overhead and exposure to inclement weather and high voltage electricity. These positions are typically exposed to any number of elements with one continuously present to the extent of being objectionable. Positions require the ability to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response.

Tools and Equipment Used:

In performing the essential functions of the position, the following electrician tools and equipment may be used: All power and hand tools pertaining to electrical work, test equipment, forklift, boom and scissor lifts, truck, and van; computer, various computer hardware and software, printer, fax machine, telephone, and other related tools and equipment.

Supervision:

Works under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Management and Planning. A Lead Electrician schedules, assigns, inspects and approves work and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. A Trades Coordinator can assign work to this position superseding the Lead Electrician. Assignments are received daily in the form of job orders or oral and written instructions. After a brief orientation period, work is performed independently. Work is reviewed periodically during and after completion of work for quality, quantity and safety. Uses broad conceptual judgment, initiative, and ingenuity to work independently toward ultimate objectives on very involved and complex projects; devises methods and procedures to meet unusual conditions and to make original contributions to the solution of complex problems.

This position may lead the work of student assistants and hourly employees.
