General Characteristics:
A Custodian is responsible for cleaning the inside of buildings and other facilities; performs minor maintenance; moves furniture and office equipment; does related work as required. Work requires a knowledge of safe handling, mixing and application of cleaning chemicals. Physical strength and agility are required to operate cleaning, waxing and other equipment, to safely lift and carry furniture, cleaning equipment and bags of trash, and to repeatedly bend, stoop and twist. Working conditions include standing and/or walking for long periods of time and potential exposure to body fluids. Positions may require the ability to work irregular hours or to rotate shifts.

Examples of Work:
Sweeps and mops floors using hand or power equipment; cleans and waxes furniture; empties trash containers; strips and refinishes floors; washes walls and mirrors; washes windows (inside and outside) using both the Unger and tucker methods; dusts; cleans chalkboards, drinking fountains, counters and lights; cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.

Vacuums, spot cleans, shampoos and extracts carpets; glues down tiles and performs minor carpet repair.

Moves furniture; arranges desks, chairs and tables; takes down or sets up chairs and tables for events; picks up supplies; makes deliveries.

Replaces light bulbs; locks and unlocks rooms; performs security surveillance.

Washes and gases vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skill in the operation of floor, carpet, wall and office cleaning equipment and tools; knowledge of and skill in mixing and applying custodial chemicals safely; knowledge of and skill in cleaning methods and procedures; ability to read, understand and apply oral and written instructions and labels; ability to operate power custodial equipment safely; ability to safely lift and carry furniture, equipment and bags weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to complete assigned duties on schedule and to work well with others or independently; ability to work irregular hours or to rotate shifts; ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods; ability to bend, stoop and twist repeatedly; ability to work well under pressure; ability to organize and prioritize work; ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to climb stairs and ladders; ability to reach overhead for extended periods; ability to perform preventive maintenance on equipment operated; knowledge of OSHA regulations as they relate to cleaning and sanitation measures; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of a custodial manager. A Lead Custodian schedules, assigns, inspects and approves work and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. After an initial orientation period, the employee is assigned to one or more buildings on a shift. Work requires employee to be self-directed and to work efficiently in order to accomplish scheduled tasks during the shift. A procedures manual is available for reference on the night shift. Work is reviewed periodically to monitor its quality and timely completion.

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position; however, this position may have occasional responsibility for training and instructing student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school Graduation or equivalent is required. Six months of experience performing the full range of custodial duties including the operation of hand and power equipment and the safe and proper mixing and applying of cleaning chemicals is required. A current Oregon driver's license is required for some positions.
Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
