General Characteristics:
A Courier is responsible for the pick up and delivery of U. S. mail, U. S. parcel post, intercampus mail, materials, supplies, schedules, textbooks, bank deposits and equipment for College departments; may assist the Mailroom staff with miscellaneous jobs that contribute to the general operation of the Mailroom; does related work as required. U. S. mail requires daily transportation between the campus and U. S. post office. U. S. and intercampus mail is picked up and delivered to various locations. Working conditions include driving, walking, transporting, loading and unloading. Requires the ability to safely transport and move boxes of books, parcel post items, bundles and mailbags.

Examples of Work:
Picks up U. S. mail and U. S. parcel post from the U. S. post office and delivers it to the Mailroom; delivers outgoing U. S. mail and U. S. parcel post to the U. S. post office.

Picks up and delivers U. S. mail, private U. S. mail, U. S. parcel post, intercampus mail, instructional materials, office supplies, schedules, textbooks, bank deposits, and equipment for the Downtown Center, Specialized Employment Services, Community Learning Centers, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and for main campus departments; maintains routing schedules and meets time deadlines.

Signs for and picks up "special mail" such as certified, insured, and U.S. overnight express for the College; delivers "special mail" to the U.S. post office; keeps records of U. S. parcel post; picks up and delivers checks for bulk mailings, postage stamps, postcards, business reply and postage due to the U.S. post office.

Assists the Mailroom staff with the general operation of the Mailroom; bags and boxes mail for delivery.

Performs routine checks on and cleans the delivery vehicle.

Knowledge. Skills and Abilities:
Ability to meet and work well with the public; ability to safely operate a vehicle in a variety of weather conditions; ability to meet deadlines; ability to safely transport, load, unload, and move boxes and mail bags weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to sort mail to delivery route units; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the direct supervision of a department chair or other supervisor. Work is performed independently using a knowledge of U. S. postal regulations and State traffic laws and established departmental policies and procedures. Employee is responsible for daily operations with the supervisor providing occasional instructions, advice and decisions. Work is reviewed for the quality of service provided to clients.

This position may have responsibility to assign work, provide priorities, train and monitor the work of student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Six months of general office or other work experience which involved organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines is required. A current Oregon driver's license is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
