General Characteristics:
A Bookstore Specialist is responsible for assisting with the operation of the Book Department, for supply or electronics buying or operating the Bookstore located at the Downtown Center; provides customer service with the selection or return of books, electronics, computers or supplies; may perform as a Book Buyer during an absence within defined scope; does related work as required. work requires considerable customer relations and organizational skills and the ability to handle large amounts of cash. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and stock merchandise. Positions may require the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Examples of Work:
Correlates textbook adoptions with term schedule and checks for accuracy of course information; contacts departments for correction or completion of information required to produce complete term booklists for students and staff; assigns term sequence numbers to correct book adoptions for each course offered by the College; prepares shelf tags and sets up shelves each term; inventories stock of textbooks in preparation for ordering books for the next term; prepares reports of purchase history for the Book Buyer; responsible for the day-to-day operation of the text management/computer system; prepares book return request forms and pulls books for return to publishers.

Oversees and participates in the effective operation of the Downtown Center Bookstore; opens and closes Downtown Bookstore and is responsible for opening and securing the vault; makes all cash and charge deposits to the bank; handles all charge sales to sponsored students; keeps records of daily and monthly sales; provides inventory control; orders merchandise and books transferred from the campus store to the Downtown Center; assists students in obtaining textbooks and supplies for classes; sets up inventory of books and supplies; prepares special reports for the Bookstore Manager.

Orders computer, electronic and general merchandise directly or indirectly related to College courses; researches catalogs, attends trade conferences, interviews sales representatives and selects vendors based on competitive pricing and bids; determines quantities and delivery dates; prepares purchase orders; receives and checks orders; clears invoice for payment; prices merchandise and stocks backroom and sales floor; maintains inventory.

Maintains frequent contact with departments, instructors and students; conducts demonstrations of computers, software and calculators; provides information about computer hardware and software products and general merchandise/supplies, makes adjustments to inventory, prices, mark downs and credits On the automated inventory management system; creates computer reports; creates the price list notebook for use at registers by cashiers; receives, posts and inputs purchase orders and invoices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of bookstore operations and procedures; ability to apply procedures required by the position to the operation of equipment used to perform the work; ability to work independently in the area assigned; ability to keep accurate records and inventory systems; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to operate cash register, calculator, computer terminal/printer, typewriter, textbook automated tracking system, inventory management system and microcomputer; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; ability to lift and stock merchandise; ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Bookstore Manager. A Book Buyer may assign tasks, train and check the work of this position. Work is performed independently according to established procedures. General instructions as to the scope of work and priorities are provided by the supervisor and/or Book Buyer. The employee is responsible for daily operations, with the supervisor and/or Book Buyer available to consult on problems and policy decisions.

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position; however, during rush periods, employees are responsible for scheduling and directing the work of hourly sales help and student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. One year of previous bookstore or library technical experience is required. This experience should be in a position equivalent to Bookstore Clerk or Library Technician which provides a general knowledge of book or periodical purchasing. Some positions in this class require that the incumbent be bondable.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
