General Characteristics:
A Bookstore Shipping/Receiving Clerk is responsible for receiving all incoming textbooks, supplies, general books and merchandise sold in the Bookstore and for the return shipping of all books and/or merchandise/ supplies returned to publishers and vendors; verifies the accuracy and inspects the condition of each shipment received by the Bookstore; prices books; may price merchandise/supplies and distribute to the proper area of the Bookstore; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift, carry, bend, stoop and move heavy boxes of books and merchandise. Positions require the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Examples of Work:
Receives all incoming UPS, truck freight and parcel post deliveries to the Bookstore; records all deliveries in a receiving journal; distributes (and may price) merchandise/supplies to the appropriate area of the Bookstore; checks textbooks for damage and verifies the accuracy of the order; prices and puts magazine stuffers in each book; shrink wraps textbooks that have items in them that could fall out; shelves the books; reports any discrepancies and files claims for any freight or UPS damages. Returns books to the publisher which are damaged, unsold, unordered or for classes that have been canceled; cleans and prepares books for shipping; determines best method of shipping; completes bill of lading and any damage claim forms; sends claims to freight companies; verifies information on vendor charge back forms; logs all returns in the appropriate journal. Delivers outgoing mail to the campus mailroom and picks up incoming mail for the Bookstore; acts as a courier for the Bookstore by delivering to or picking up books or other items from other College departments; empties all wastebaskets in the office daily and breaks down boxes. Assists customers during rush periods; inventories Bookstore shelves; keeps work area clean, orderly and secure.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of general warehouse receiving procedures; ability to operate postal and other scales accurately; ability to correctly read and understand a bill of lading or invoice; ability to write and print legibly; ability to operate a ten-key calculator accurately; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to read and understand procedures; ability to make decisions within established Bookstore and College procedures and guidelines; ability to work with frequent interruptions; ability to work effectively with staff; ability to lift, carry, bend, stoop and move heavy boxes; ability to operate a pricing gun, calculator, typewriter, electronic bar coder, text management computer system, microcomputer, postal scale, shrink wrap machine, hand truck and cash register; ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the direct supervision of the Bookstore Manager. A Book Buyer assigns work and trains this position. Work is performed according to established guidelines. Employee is responsible for daily operations with the Book Buyer providing occasional instructions, advice and decisions.

Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of this position; however, this position may direct and guide hourly staff during temporary rush periods.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Six months of shipping/receiving/warehouse experience is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
