General Characteristics:
A Bindery Operator/Courier is responsible for performing work on duplicated and printed material and picking up and delivering printing/ graphics orders to all College departments; checks to make sure copiers are operating and adequately stocked with paper and toner; operates and performs preventive maintenance on equipment such as folders, staplers, drills, cutters and binders; assists other departmental staff in other areas as assigned; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift, carry, bend, stoop and move heavy boxes of paper. working conditions include standing and/or walking for long periods of time indoors and out-of-doors in all weather conditions.

Examples of Work:

Sets up and operates collator, folder, staplers, 3011 programmable paper cutter, flexbinder, booklet maker, perfect binding machine, padding machine, numbering machine, paper drill, button maker, jogger and shrink-wrapping equipment; performs preventive maintenance on bindery equipment, such as oiling, cleaning and replacing worn parts.

Picks up and delivers printing/graphics orders at various locations on campus; delivers Inter-Campus order Services (ICOS) and Purchase Orders (POs) to Purchasing; delivers The Daily to the Mailroom.
Performs manual bindery tasks such as folding, collating, stitching, padding and numbering.

Maintains public and office copiers on campus by monitoring all copiers to make sure they are operating and adequately stocked with paper and toner; supplies information from the copiers for billing; programs identification numbers.

Stocks shelves with paper; cleans and organizes work area.

Duplicates on department copier; assists graphic artist in making megalith plates and laminating.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to organize and work quickly and accurately; ability to operate collators, folders, staplers, programmable paper cutter, flexbinder, booklet maker, binding machines, padding machines, numbering machine, paper drill, button maker, joggers and shrink-wrapping equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions carefully; ability to work well with others and as part of a team; ability to deal with printinq/qraphics customers in a pleasant, tactful and courteous manner; ability to lift and carry boxes of paper weighing up to 55 pounds; ability to occasionally assist another person to lift and carry cartons of paper weighing up to 160 pounds; basic mechanical aptitude; ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time indoors and out-of-doors in all weather conditions; ability to use chemicals safely; ability to perform preventive maintenance on equipment; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Reports to and works under the direct supervision of the Printing/Graphics Manager who is responsible for scheduling, assigning, directing and evaluating the work. As experience is gained on the job, the employee performs work independently according to established schedules and procedures. Day-to-day instructions are taken from work orders and other Printing/Graphics staff with priorities determined by the supervisor. Work is reviewed for the timeliness and quality of service provided to customers and for adherence to safety standards.

This position may have responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities and train student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation or equivalent is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
