Frequently Asked Questions

I'm really interested in the HIM program. Are there any exceptions to the application guidelines, processes, or timelines?

No. Admission is based on completion of the pre-requisites and completed application submission. Applications submitted with missing or sub-par pre-requisites will not be considered. All application requirements must be completed on or before the application deadline. Applications are available on our Application Information page. You may also contact the Health Professions advisors at HIMProgram@lanecc.edu.

What courses and activities do I need to complete my application?

All of the following courses need to be completed prior to admission into the HIM (these courses make up the Basic Health Care certificate)

  • HO100 Medical Terminology 1
  • Human Body Systems 1
  • Human Body Systems 2 (or all three: BI 231, BI232, and BI233)
  • MTH052 Math for Physical Science, or higher, or credit by exam for MTH052 or higher, or transcripted credits: AP Calculus or CLEP (college algebra, or any calculus or statistics) or IB [(mathematics or math studies, or further mathematics or statistics (3-4 credits)]

  • Choice of: (3-4 credits)
    • CIS101 Computer Fundamentals, or
    • CS120 Concepts of Computing: Information Processing, or

It's been awhile since I have been in college. Do I need to retake any classes?

The above classes must have been successfully completed (with a “C” or better) within the last five years of your application year. If you have worked in a related field within the last five years and have prior course work equivalent to HO100, HO150, and HO152, you are invited to consult the program coordinator williamssk@lanecc.edu to review your experience for equivalency.

How many students will the program accept? What are my chances in getting admitted?

Currently, there is no cap on the number of students accepted; however, the job market where the student is looking to work will drive employment numbers.

I'm concerned about the criminal background check and alcohol and drug screens. How might these outcomes affect my program eligibility?

All students must have a clear criminal background check and drug screen in order to begin cooperative education placements. If the program is unable to place you in a clinical setting due to something in your criminal background or alcohol and drug screens, you may not be able to complete the program. If you have any history of criminal activity or concerns about drug screen outcomes, you are encouraged to contact program advising, HIMProgram@lanecc.edu

Do I have to be an Oregon resident to be accepted in the HIM program?

No.

I've taken classes outside of Lane that seem similar to the prerequisites. Will the program accept my previous coursework?

All courses must be transferable for credit toward an AAS degree at LCC. Students with military experience are encouraged to consult with Enrollment Services for course equivalencies. Students should use the Lane transfer tool to determine if previous coursework will be accepted as the equivalent at LCC. The transfer tool is also referenced on the program application.

I am not sure if online courses are right for me, any suggestions?

Every online course is taught by a fully qualified instructor. Students will have access to their instructors via email and Moodle messaging as well as scheduled office hours (may be virtual or on campus). With online classes, students do best when setting regular times each week for study and completion of assignments. Having good reading comprehension and taking the opportunity to ask the instructor questions when clarification is needed are important in student success. The Academic Technology Center of Lane Community College offers a “How To” Moodle tutorial. Students also have access to the Student Help Desk (SHeD) by telephone or email for technology support.

I think I'm ready to apply to the HIM Program. Can someone help me review my transcripts to see if I have everything I need?

Yes. Students may utilize their MyGradPlan “What If” functionality for the Basic Health Care Career Pathway certificate to see if they have met the application prerequisites. Additionally, Program advisors can help. Email HIMProgram@lanecc.edu for guidance and a schedule of drop-in hours.

Is the HIM program accredited by a professional organization?

There are no accreditations at this time. However, the Medical Coding Career Pathway prepares graduates to take an entry level coding exam either from AAPC or AHIMA.
