Purpose

To maintain a safe and supportive campus environment for all students, staff, and community members by ensuring a learning and work environment free from bias, discrimination, and harassment on the basis of gender identity.

Narrative

In connection with the College’s Mission, Values, and Strategic Directions, and in accordance with the Oregon Equality Act, this policy will maintain and promote a safe and supportive environment for all members of the campus community. Under this policy employees of the college will ensure safety and access for individuals of all gender identities, and protect student, staff, and community members’ rights to their individual gender identity.

Under this policy the Administration of the College will take all reasonable steps to ensure that:

  • systems and structures of the college enable employees to take all reasonable steps to satisfy the requirements of this policy.
  • if a student1, staff, or community member self-identifies their chosen name and pronouns, their name and pronouns will be respected in all interactions with this individual.
  • all documentation and disclosure of information related to gender identities, including health care information, legal names, and sex assigned at birth, shall be kept confidential and shall be appropriately maintained by authorized personnel in accordance with applicable state, local, and federal privacy laws.
  • the requirements of this policy will be included in new employee orientations, codes of conduct, disciplinary policies, and handbooks.
  • all activities, policies, rules, and practices that directly include consideration of genders–including classroom activities, ceremonies, athletics, and photos–are evaluated to ensure that only those that are in alignment with the college’s stated values and, where appropriate, clearly articulated educational outcomes, are maintained to avoid marginalizing, stigmatizing, or excluding any college member.

1 Students may wish to be identified by a professional, personal, display or use name without making an official legal name change. To ensure that their chosen name is the one appearing in official college systems, students should be referred to the myName Policy.

Report violations of this policy through the Sexual Misconduct, Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Discrimination Complaint Process with oversight of the complaint process by the Title IX Coordinator.

Definitions

Gender Identity (as defined by Human Rights Campaign): is one’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. It is important to note that one's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth, as well as gender expression.
