Purpose

Lane Community College recognizes the value of granting credit for prior learning (CPL) and non-traditional credit awards providing the practices for granting credit are carefully monitored and documented by Lane's faculty.

Narrative

Students are encouraged to review the following steps and information links in order to determine if they are eligible for credit for prior learning and if credit for prior learning is a good fit to their educational goals at Lane.

Steps for Earning Credit for Prior Learning

1. Identify the type of Credit for Prior Learning you would like to be considered for credit toward a Lane Degree or Certificate.

  1. College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
  2. Advanced Placement
  3. International Baccaulearate
  4. American College of Education Transcript (includes Joint Services Military Transcripts)
  5. Credit by Exam
  6. Credit by Assessment

2. Follow the appropriate steps to request credit for prior learning. Students may request more than one type of credit for prior learning.

  1. College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
    1. Check that you have qualifying exams scores College-Level Examinations
    2.  Arrange to have your official score reports from the CollegeBoard sent to Lane Community College
    3. Submit your transcript to have the score reviewed for transferability to a Lane Degree or Certificate.
    4. You will be notified by email when your scores have been evaluated. At that time you may review the results on your Advising Worksheet in myLane/myGradPlan.
  2. Advanced Placement (AP)
    1. Check that you have qualifying exams scores College-Level Examinations
    2. Arrange to have your official score reports from the CollegeBoard sent to Lane Community College
    3. Submit your transcript to have the score reviewed for transferability to a Lane Degree or Certificate.
    4. You will be notified by email when your scores have been evaluated. At that time you may review the results on your Advising Worksheet in myLane/myGradPlan.
  3. International Baccalaureate
    1. Check that you have qualifying exams scores College-Level Examinations
    2. Arrange to have your official score reports from the CollegeBoard sent to Lane Community College
    3. Submit your transcript to have the score reviewed for transferability to a Lane Degree or Certificate.
    4. You will be notified by email when your scores have been evaluated. At that time you may review the results on your Advising Worksheet in myLane/myGradPlan.
  4. American College on Education (ACE) Transcript or Joint Services Military Transcript (JST)
    1. Check that you have qualifying exams scores College-Level Examinations
    2. Arrange to& have your official transcript from ACE sent to Lane Community College or visit the JST site and order your official military transcript.
    3. Submit your transcript and identify the training courses you would like to have reviewed for transfer to Lane.
      1. Not all training courses will have an equivalent to Lane course offerings. Typically, military transcripts showing successful completion of basic training will be eligible for 3 credits of PE at Lane. Additional credits awarded will be based upon the ACE credit recommendations and the applicability to your degree or certificate goals.
      2. Specific vocational or technical skill courses will need to be reviewed by faculty who teach that specific program of study area; for example, military electronics training will need review by Advanced Technology faculty who teach in the Electronics program.
    4. You will be notified by email when your scores have been evaluated. At that time you may review the results on your Advising Worksheet in myLane/myGradPlan.
