Vanguard Learning College: Critical Problems and Issues

Solutions to Problems and Issues

II. Technology

Part A. Using Technology to improve and expand learning for students.

1. What are your college's plans to ensure that all students have access to the technology tools and training necessary to have a basic level of technology literacy?

We do not have a comprehensive plan. An earlier attempt to institute a computer literacy requirement was rejected. Some departments have their own requirement.

2. How is your college building programs that encourage students to develop the capacity to learn in multiple formats (for example, traditional, technology enabled and mixed mode)?

To date, this has been left to individual faculty initiative. We are beginning the process of planning for a campus strategy as part of the Vanguard Learning College Project.

3. How is your college using technology tools to promote learning communities and collaboration?

We use email extensively. Some instructors are using course bulletin boards as part of their teaching paradigm.

4. How do you ensure that your college's technology budget is being spent on tools and techniques that will impact student learning in the broadest and most effective ways?

No measurement has been established.

Part B. Using technology to enhance learning for faculty and staff and to improve college operations.

1. How does your college train faculty and staff to make best use of technology?

We have a staff training program and an instructional technology support center. Faculty who teach online hold training sessions for other faculty interested in beginning to use technology in their teaching.

2. How does your college decide which technology tools and training will best promote learning at the institution?

Individual faculty and departments make these decisions.

3. How is your college developing a comprehensive technology strategy to create a more learning-centered technology infrastructure?

As part of the Vanguard Learning College Project we are beginning to put together our strategic and operational plans for online education.

4. What creative approaches are being used to ensure a return on investment for your college's technology expenditures?

Unknown.

5. How is your college blending all elements of its technology infrastructure (eg Web system, phone system, in-person/on-campus services, learning tools and strategies) to improve learning?

Both activities under the technology objective of the VLC project address this issue. Lane is proceeding to modernize our administrative support systems to support any time, any where services and addressing the questions around online. The two efforts are well integrated.
