Scholarship Deadlines are fast approaching. OSAC-March 1st, this Thursday, Lane Foundation-March 15th! Don't put off what you know you want to do! Scholarship Essays are time-consuming, as they require rewriting . . . more than once. TRiO's writing tutors are skilled in this process and can help you write what the scholarship folks are looking for in these short essays. It is highly recommended to make appointments with our writing tutors from the very beginning of your essay efforts and throughout the process. Appointments give you one-on-one time to examine your essays and assure you are meeting the essay requirements. As the deadline draws near, you want to be in at least your third rewrite, fine tuning what you have written. Make appointments today!

Don't miss the March 15th early deadline to apply at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Check out the transfer website for all sorts of great information http://admissions.uoregon.edu/transfer/transfer). Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from the TRiO office.

U of O Transfer Students for Spring 2012: Before registering for classes, you are REQUIRED to attend an orientation session. Monday, March 5th is the day. To sign up for an orientation session you will log onto DUCKWEB with your student I.D. and PAC numbers (these numbers are mailed in a letter from admissions that acknowledges they have received your application). Transferring Fall 2012: Friday, July 6th and Wednesday, July 25th are the orientation days.

Appointment times are filling up fast. Appointments with tutors give you 30 minutes of uninterrupted time to cover your subject. Come prepared to make the most of it. These last weeks of school are intense. Please keep the appointments you make or cancel them so another TRiO student can use that time. Also, please don't sign up on the board when you will have an appointment in a few minutes. Leave the drop-in time for another student as the tutor won't be available again until the end of your session.
Math Study Groups meet through the end of week 10. Don't forget to go. The dates and times are posted in the TLC. All groups meet in Bldg 5, room 214.

Printing "All" or a "Selection". Did you know you don't need to print the whole document if you have a change on only one page? You can print each page separately. You can also highlight information and print only the "selection." "Selection" printing sometimes requires an extra step when on the Internet. A tutor will be glad to show you how this is done.

Advance warning to save all your work from the NetStorage at Lane to a flash drive or send it as attachments in an email to yourself. During the spring break, the " My Documents" of the "N" drive will be purged.

Cold Season/Allergy Season. Please be aware that fragrances you wear can and do cause reactions in those who are allergic in your classrooms and in the TLC. Fragrances, especially strong ones, can cause headaches and even set off migraines that can cause a student to have to miss classes and be unable to study. TRiO students and tutors in the TLC have been affected by fragrances worn by other students, so please remember why it is just not a good idea to wear fragrances to Lane. Thank you for considering others.

Printing and Uploading Transcripts? Use "MyLane print icon" on the upper right of the header to print transcripts. Do not use the "Windows icon. Convert transcripts to CutePDF so you can upload them to your OSAC. Instructions are on the pink sheets on the typing stands, but you can ask a tutor to help you through them. Never save transcripts as WORD documents--you will lose all formatting.

Scholarship Application Deadlines are fast approaching!  OSAC application is due March 1st, Lane Foundation application is due March 15th. These are great opportunities to apply for multiple scholarships with one application process. And even better, the Lane application uses the same essays and Activities Chart as the OSAC application uses. Did you know there is a scholarship specifically for TRiO students in the Lane Foundation Book? That means you are only competing with about 100 other students because 80 of our students won't be back next year due to graduation and transfer. There is also a scholarship offered through Disability Resources. Be sure to apply!

Lane has received a donation for a $2500, annual, need-based scholarship for culinary students. The donor does not care if the students are first or second year students. But if possible,  the donor's  preference is to direct the scholarships to minority students.   The donor has long admired the work of our culinary program and its wonderful faculty!

PSU Visits Lane.  Interested in PSU's Extended Campus program?  Majors are social sciences, liberal studies, and possibly arts and letters.  Schedule an appointment to see an academic advisor 503-315-4281 or by email at psusalem@pdx.edu.
Thurs Feb 16th 9:30 am to 4:00 p.m. 447 Center Bldg.

Thurs Feb 23 9:30 am to 4:00 p.m. 407 Center Bldg.

U of O at Lane.  U of O Advisor/Admissions and Financial Aid Advisor's are available in the Lane Counseling/Advising Office.  February 22nd, April 11th, April 25th. See Counseling/Advising reception desk to make your appointment.

Don't miss mid-February and mid-March deadlines at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Check out the transfer website for all sorts of great information http://admissions.uoregon.edu/transfer/transfer).  Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from Marla.

Community Forum Workshops.  Interested in culinary arts?  Julie Fether from Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management programs at Lane, will describe the major and career options in her department, as well as offer a tour of the facilities such as classrooms and kitchen's used for students in the programs. Wednesday, February 15th, 12:00-1:00, Bldg. 11, Room 240.

Scholarships Essay Help.  Please help our writing tutors help you by making appointments throughout the week to work on your essays. A few of you could have gotten help last week if you had signed up for an appointment that was open and available at the time. Appointments have priority over drop-in help, but if you sign up on the board behind others, you have to wait your turn, and that's a truth for math as well.

Activity Charts.  If your Activities Chart entry takes up only ONE LINE, the "To" date gets cut off. So, in your next draft, you'll want to make sure that your entry takes up both lines. That's a good thing, since it means you'll want to add another "sentence" in the Responsibility/Accomplishment column to describe what you did, and then the entry will go onto the second line...and then the date will show. We'll show you this in class on Wednesday.

Study Groups. Study groups become more important as a success strategy in the second half of the term when new material is presented more often. Attendance can be critical to your success, and if you come prepared, you get more out of the sessions. Don't forget! A minimum attendance of three is required each week to keep the group from being canceled and the tutor returned to the very busy TLC. Some groups only have three members, so it is vital to tell us if you are sick and cannot attend. However, for everyone's sake, please don't schedule other appointments during the group time and log those dates in your planners. Study group information is posted in the TLC.

Thank you for using the card holders while you work in the TLC.  They help the tutors see that you are checked in, and, being easily visible, remind the tutors to document their time with you, which is vital to our funding. Yet, one of the main functions of the card holders is that using them assures the cards don't accidentally get swooped up with your books and papers when you leave, especially when leaving in a hurry. It is  important the cards never leave the TLC as the documentation on your cards is only entered in the computer once or twice a week.

Lost flash drives can be a disaster.  Be sure to back up your work by saving to My Documents on the TRiO computers. Then, should your flash drive disappear, or you forget it at home, you have the work waiting for you at Lane. You can even upload work from home to the NetStorage (MyDocuments). Ask a tutor for the instructions.

Ergonomic Chairs.  Available through Disability Resources to those who have that accommodation.  If you are registered with DR but don't know if you have that accommodation, check in their office. If you qualify, you can request an ergonomic chair be placed in the TRiO Learning Center (TLC) and in any of your classrooms.

Pop-ups.  If you are working on a college application or other program and it keeps rerouting you to a previous page, it may be your pop-up blocking software that is the problem. When you click on the link, watch the top of the page under the toolbars. If there is a brief flash of a message that says a pop-up has been blocked or that the program could not open a second window, you may have to temporarily turn off your pop-up blocker. Go to tools, pop-up blocker and choose turn off pop-up blocker. If this helps the problem then keep it off, but remember to turn it back on as soon as you are finished so that you don't get security problems. This was an issue with a UO application and may be with other programs.

Are you planning on graduating this Spring or Summer? It's time to think about applying for graduation! Participation in the spring graduation commencement requires completing all degree or certificate requirements by the end of spring term, or having nine or fewer credits remaining after the completion of spring term. The graduation application deadline is April 30th, but your application date puts you in line for getting your transcripts officially evaluated which must happen before your degree is conferred. That will inform you if there is anything missing.

Applying for Graduation/Degree. Once a student applies for graduation they have two terms, including the term of application, to complete their degree or certificate. So if you won't be finishing your credits until summer, please wait until the beginning of Spring term to apply. But, if you know you will be done by the end of spring, you can apply now. See graduation information at http://www.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm

NetStorage = My Documents. Saving to My Documents in the labs at Lane is safe as the documents are saved under your L# in a large "nursery." NetStorage is a great back-up if you depend on your flash drive. What if you forgot it? or lost it? or your dog ate it? Well, if you also saved to NetStorage, your documents are waiting for you. You can also save to it from your laptop or home computer or get to documents created at Lane by logging into Lane Home Page. Instructions are on the check-in desk. January 24, 2012

Here we are at the beginning of Week Three--Winter Term is flying by, along with January! Remember to take good care of yourself and stay warm and dry!

New Federal Financial Aid Rules go into Effect in July 2012. College students will be limited to a maximum of six years of Pell grant funding to earn a Bachelor's degree. The new rule is retroactive, meaning that these limits will apply retroactively to students who are currently enrolled or have been enrolled in the past. There is still the 150% maximum credit limit rule, meaning that the maximum number of credits a student may attempt is 150% of the credits required to complete their program.

It is more important than ever to ensure you are on track to your degree, and that you will have adequate time and credits available to complete your upper division (junior and senior level) work at the university if you are transferring to earn a Bachelor's degree. Attend Oregon Transfer Day, the TRiO Transfer Workshop, and the U of O Tour. Get in to talk with Kate to make a plan for transfer.

Are you Tracking your Academic Progress Standing? Remember that the new Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards are in effect. If you received a Warning from Financial Aid at the end of fall term, it is CRITICAL that you complete Winter term in good standing, or you will lose Financial Aid for spring. For some students who hit Warning status, they may have to exceed the Academic Progress standards to reach good standing. Use the SAP calculator on the Financial Aid web page (http://www.lanecc.edu/finaid/sapcalc.htm) to estimate your cumulative GPA and cumulative credits completed for the end of Winter term.

Financial Aid Refund Delay.  Because of the delay last week in student's receiving financial aid, Enrollment Services have posted a down-loadable PDF for students to access. This PDF is an open letter to your creditors, and will be available for you to use until February 15, 2012. The direct address for the PDF is http://www.lanecc.edu/finaid/forms/documents/Delayed%20disbursement%20letter%20January%202012.pdf or you can go to http://www.lanecc.edu/finaid/index.htm. On the right side of the page, item 3 refers to the delayed Financial Aid refund and contains the link to the PDF.

LCC Play "Exploding Love" this Week. Thursday, January 26th, 7:30 p.m., Lane Blue Door Theatre. There are still some free tickets left for this week's performance. We have an agreement with the Student Production Association (SPA) that they offer us a certain amount of tickets FREE for each performance. We are grateful for this arrangement, and encourage you to come and "play." "Exploding Love" is a zany over-the-top comedy about love, marriage, and dynamite. Please see the TRiO office if you are interested in getting a ticket. You need to pick up a ticket from the TRiO Office, and then call to reserve your seat before Thursday. First come-first served!

TRiO Transfer Workshop. Tuesday, January 31st, 2:00-3:00, 30/213. If you are considering transferring to the U of O or any other four-year college, here is your chance to ask questions, and hear a panel of college personnel tell you what's important to know. Schools who will attend: PSU, UO, OSU, NWCU, Concordia, George Fox, and OIT. Sign up in TLC if interested. Don't miss it!

The TLC Schedule is still in flux, but will be complete by week four. Please refer to the printed schedule in the TLC (and our last e-news) for updates happening during this week (Week 3). We will send you a new schedule for Week 4.

Scholarship Essays, course essays, any essays at all, see TRiOs writing tutors Liz, Shalimar, and Nancy. They are skilled with helping you find topics, answer the OSAC essay questions as required, get your grammar and punctuation in line, and organize your writing. Make appointments and/or use drop-in tutoring per these tutors' schedules.

Help keep the card box in order. Please be careful when you pull an entire section of cards out of the box to find yours. Several times cards have been returned to the box but behind the wrong letter. Cards go behind the letter of the last name. Purple cards of the most recent TRiO students go in front, pink cards of students new to TRiO last fall go next, and the white cards of returning TRiO students fill in the last.

Study Groups: Math 65, Math 95, and Math 111 have formed. Updates are posted on the TRiO bulletin board. Other groups have students signed up but without one time that works for at least three of them. Math 60 is close, and Math 20 needs more to sign up. Feel free to sign up with your available times for any structured math course from Math 10 to Math 256. Sign up on the blue sheets on the blue clipboard on the Information Table. Follow the instructions at the top of the page. Meanwhile, use tutors for drop-in help and make appointments.

NetStorage can be life-saving, or course-saving, if you lose your flashdrive. Use it as a back-up. Save your work to NetStorage (My Documents on the TLC and other lab computers). You can even upload work from your home computer or laptop to your personal NetStorage My Documents account at Lane or, from your laptop or home computer, work on documents saved in NetStorage simply by logging in. Instructions are on handouts on the check-in table. Tutors can also give you assistance.

Help Us Practice Sustainable Printing. Print only assignments relative to your course work. If you need to print Power Point slides, please print handouts with six slides per page. Also, be sure to check "grey scale only" so the slides don't print all the dark backgrounds. Please talk with a tutor before printing Power Point slides to make sure you have the selected sustainable print options. We will help you to conserve ink and paper. If you are printing information from websites, please make sure you are not printing more pages than you need. The less paper and ink we purchase, the more tutoring hours we can provide. Please get help to avoid using extra ink and paper. The tutors can help you be economical and efficient.

Career Coffee Talks in the TRiO STEM Office.
-Math and Engineering - Friday, January 27th, 1-2 p.m., Bldg. 12/201. Chat with Math instructor, Angela Martinek, about lucrative careers in Math and Engineering. Angela previously was employed as a mechanical engineer.

Welcome New Tutors. Garret and Shalimar are also both STEM tutors now working with us in TRiO.  Garret covers general sciences and math through 111 on Tuesday mornings.  Shalimar covers all social sciences and is exceptional with scholarship help.  She will be here from 12:30 to 1:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  We lost a couple of tutors over the break and are trying to fill those shifts.  Please note the pale yellow shifts on the schedule with the words "to be announced."  We may fill those shifts before the next TRiO E-news, so check the schedule posted in the TLC for updates.   TRiO TLC Cards.  Please use the individual card stands, which help us quickly observe you are TRiO students and that you are signed in. The cards are also helpful in that tutors are less likely to forget to document the time spent helping students. Please remember to use them.   Study Groups. Students are signing up.  Be sure to sign up with ALL your available hours in a week.  That gives options as three students are required to form a 50-minute study group.  If you have already signed up, please review your times in case you can adjust them.  Some subjects have "almost" fit within an hour's time.  So if your schedule can be more flexible or if you have had changes in your courses, correct the sheet to match your availabilities.   -Math 111 Study Group meets 10:00 to 10:50 Tuesdays, 5/214 -Math 65 Study Group is in the confirmation process.   Library Remaining VHS Movie Tapes Now on Sale.  The Library's remaining VHS movie tapes are now on sale at the rear of the Library at $.50 cents/tape.
