| Dear TRiO Students: |
|
|
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend. It might be good that it is going to start raining again, so we don't get spring fever too early in the term. Speaking of Spring Fever, it has been VERY quiet in the TLC, which means that there are not too many of you in here doing your studying and using the tutors. We know that everyone is pretty tired by the time spring term rolls around, but is VERY important to keep on top of your workload from the beginning of the term. So come on in! Do your work here, so you can go home and play outside.
1. Graduating in Spring or Summer? Be sure to get your application in by April 30th. All the info is at http://www.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm
2. Recruiting for 2008-09 Student Service Associates - The Counseling Department is looking for SSAs for the next academic year. It is a GREAT on-campus job assisting fellow students with career information, employment resources, scholarship research, class scheduling and ExpressLane functions. Pick up an information slip on the TLC check-in desk or in the TRiO office. Information sessions be gin this week and applications are due April 30th.
3. TRiO Workshop this Friday--Sign up now! This workshop focuses on learning and study strategies and provides information for those who may have learning challenges. Please sign up in the TLC or contact Marla to sign up at 463-3131 or nortonm@lanecc.edu The workshop is scheduled for Friday, 4/18, 2:00 - 3:30 in the TLC.
4. Study Groups: It's Week 3, so you will want to get your math and science study groups going before midterms. Popular study groups have been Math 60, 65, 95, and Biobonds. If you are in any of these, we suggest you try to form a study group. Read the instructions on the sign up sheets, as study groups are student generated, formed when at least three students have put down available times they can meet, and one time works for all. Don't wait! Be the first to sign up your available times, and others will put theirs down too. Ask any tutor about study groups if you have further questions. ~~ Math 20: I've had several ask me, but no one has signed any times down that they can meet. I need you to put your available times on the list if you really want to arrange a group. ~~Math 60 only shows one interested party. Are there more? ~~Math 65 study Group is scheduled each Tuesday from 12:00 to 12:50 with Adam. If we don't find a room for you to meet this week, you can meet in the TLC for your first session.
5. Please complete a TRiO Program Evaluation Form and the form that tells us your plans for next year. Both forms are available in the TLC or TRiO Office, and the Evaluation form is attached here. You can either print it out, complete it and turn it in, or complete it electronically and submit it by e-mail to nortonm@lanecc.edu. It is really important to us to get your feedback, so please take the 5-10 minutes it takes to complete the form. If you drop it off in the TRiO office you get a treat!
6. New TLC Schedule: Attached is the new TLC schedule, which is also posted in the TLC. Take a moment to view the changes and look over all the subjects and courses TRiO tutors are able too help you with. Remember, you can sign up all day as many times as you need for drop-in tutoring and also sign up for three 30-minute appointments each week with tutors. Students who use tutor help throughout a term excel in their courses; it's a fact!
7. Best times in the TLC: Fridays (8:30 till 2:00) and Monday -Thursday afternoons between 3:00 and 4:30. These slow times are quiet and a great time to get lots of attention. The afternoons are always the least crowded times, and especially towards the end of the day . Make use of these periods to get tutor help. Either Jenn or Bill are here until closing (see TLC schedule attached).
8. Keep Lane's tutoring services free for your use. If this winter term you use (or expect to use) a tutor in any of the labs on campus, including the TLC, please register for at least one of the non-credit, no-cost, zilch-attendance courses listed on the TLC typing stands. Any subject for which you receive tutor assistance spring term counts. If registering is confusing, ask a tutor to help. These courses verify that tutors are used and assure we get funding for tutoring at Lane.
9. Moodle Tip: When you need to write papers or answer questions that may take some time to work on, you can type them in MS WORD and then copy them into the Moodle blocks provided or upload them as documents via the Moodle links for uploading. If you don't know how, TRiO tutors can to help you. Don't wait to ask. Get familiar with your Moodle now. Tutors will help you.
10. GRADUATE KEYNOTE SPEAKER CONTEST
At graduation, a student is chosen to give the keynote address. Contestants for the graduation student keynote speaker contest are sought. The contest will be held on May 5, between 3-5 p.m. Students will present their speeches to a panel of judges. The winner will be awarded $100.00 and will be able to give his or her speech at the ceremony on June 14. For more information, contact Tina Lymath at 463-5336.
