Summary of "lessons learned" while Creating Lane's Web site:
Late Spring '95: Coordinate
early page development with site development. Ideally, guidelines
for pages are developed before the first pages are created.
Consult with experts at every opportunity.
Summer '95: Involve interested parties early but be realistic about how fast the site will be developed.
Early Fall '95: Form a Web
Site Steering committee that represents Faculty (a graphic designer if
possible), Student Services, Administration, Marketing, and Computer Services.
In developing guidelines for pages, try to balance order
with creativity.
Fall '95: Consult with experts
at every opportunity.
Create a way for pages to be posted easily (using "Fetch"
for example)
Winter '96: Keep Administrators
and Board members informed about Web site development.
Offer training for staff interested in web page development.
Provide release time for staff to develop pages.
Post information from the printed catalog AND provide
a way for departments to publicize new information without creating confusion.
Spring '96: Use a variety of
sources to seek information and feedback on your Web site.
Continue to formulate, revise, justify, and publicize
policy and guidelines.
Summer '96: Pay competitive salaries to retain valuable staff.
Fall '96: Continue to evaluate the mission of the committee and to revise guidelines as necessary.
