Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Zeta Chapter Fall 2008 Newsletter The Paradox of Wellness (includes physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual health) Leadership Conference The leadership conference will be held October 10-12 at the Portland CC, Sylvania Campus. The majority of the program begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $45; information is on the regional website (www.rmcptk.org). Lane Bond As you may know, Lane CC has a bond measure on the November ballot. If you are not already familiar with the bond, please review the pictures and information posted on Lane’s web site (www.lanecc.edu/bond). During the Alumni Gathering, participants had an opportunity to tour the tunnels below Lane. We heard from many alumni that they were surprised by the conditions and the enormous need for upgrading Lane’s infrastructure. Please become informed and vote! Campus Beautification Project Each year our chapter works with Lane’s administration to determine an appropriate campus project. Once again we will be planting bulbs to beautify the entrance to Lane. We have two dates scheduled, Wednesday, October 22, and Wednesday, October 29. We will meet at 3 p.m. at the chapter office (Building 17, Room 312). This is our fun activity for the month. Please come help one or both days! 30th Avenue Road Cleanup Our next road cleanup is on Sunday, November 2. We will meet at 9 a.m. in Lot N (northeast corner of the campus). We will pick up as much trash as possible along 30th Avenue from Interstate 5 to Spring Boulevard. We will end with a potluck lunch in the workroom of the Business Department (south end of the first floor of Building 2). Please come and participate for all or part of the cleanup. If you want to participate in lunch, please bring something to share. If your food needs refrigeration, Velda will be in the Business Department from 8:30-8:45 a.m. for you to drop off your items. Don’t forget to set your clocks back on Saturday evening before the cleanup! Better World Book Pickup This term we are trying a different approach to collecting textbooks on campus. We will go around campus on three days during the term. This will be a huge effort, as we want to go to each department to collect textbooks. Days for book pickup are: * Friday, October 31 (you may wear a costume) * Wednesday, November 26 (the day before Thanksgiving) * Friday, December 12 (last day of fall term) If you can help us pick up books, at least in one department, that would greatly help our efforts. After each pickup, we will, of course, sort, box, and prepare the books for shipping. We will also continue collecting books in connection with the Bookstore’s regular book buy-back. If you have any textbooks to donate, please contact us. Harvest Baskets The third annual Harvest Basket activity will occur in November. Nomination forms will be available online in November. This is a rewarding activity. We will organize boxes late in the afternoon on Monday, November 24. Distribution will be during the afternoons on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 25 and 26. Alumni Gathering and Alumni Chapter The Alumni Gathering was a lot of fun for everyone. The tunnel and sustainability tours were fantastic. The best news is that we are getting very close to having enough alumni to charter an alumni chapter. Megan and Velda have been contacting alumni, and if you, or anyone you know, would be willing to help get the alumni chapter going, please let us know. Alumni officer positions are available. Regional Honors Institute The date and location have not been confirmed, but the Regional Honors Institute will be held in November. In previous years the event was held in Turner, Oregon, but after our conference last May at Camp Harlow, the location was changed to Camp Harlow. If the weekend is the same as previously, it would be November 21-23. If you would like to attend, please contact us. Work Study Positions Our chapter has three work study positions this year. If you have work study and are interested in helping our chapter (or know someone who has work study funding), please contact Velda as soon as possible. To view the job details, go to studentjobs.lanecc.edu and look for Job ID 2159. Our goal is to have the chapter office open as much as possible. There are also many projects and activities these students could help with. Chapter Office If you have not already visited the new office in Building 17 (the Forum Building), Room 312, please come by. It is a very nice space. As stated previously, we hope to have the office open all day during the term. Honors Study Topic Our chapter is continuing our work with the Paradox of Wellness in these four areas: * Wellness & Affluence—Health Care Facilities * Wellness & Affluence—Veterans * Wellness & Affluence—Sexual Health * Wellness & Affluence—The Environment and Our Health Related to the last topic, we are learning much more about the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals. Currently there are no safe systems being implemented either in our community or within Oregon. See our blog at sigmazeta.wordpress.com. If you are interested in becoming involved with any of these projects, please come to a chapter meeting or contact us. Wellness Fair The Wellness Fair will be held in the Cafeteria on Tuesday, November 18. We are inviting groups on campus and in the community to come share their services with students. If you have ideas for participants or your program would like to be included, please contact us soon. Meetings Chapter meetings are currently being held on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in Building 2, Room 213. Normally we are finished by 5 p.m., but we may extend until 5:30 on some days.
