Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Zeta Chapter November 2008 Newsletter The Paradox of Wellness Our chapter members have continued to research the Paradox of Wellness in these four areas: * Wellness & Affluence—Health Care Facilities * Wellness & Affluence—Veterans * Wellness & Affluence—Sexual Health * Wellness & Affluence—The Environment and Our Health Summary information on each of these will be presented during the Wellness Fair. Also, please see our blog at sigmazeta.wordpress.com. A few of the areas that the students have found particularly interesting are suicide prevention and proper pharmaceutical disposal. Wellness Fair The Wellness Fair will be held in the Cafeteria on Tuesday, November 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are inviting organizations in the community to share their services with students. We will also have presentations in Building 2, Room 213 during the day. Please visit the tables in the cafeteria and attend the presentations. More details are available on our chapter’s web site. Regional Honors Institute The Regional Honors Institute will be held November 21-23, 2008 at Camp Harlow in Eugene, Oregon. The registration is $75 per person, which covers your room and board. Please see the regional web site, www.rmcptk.org, for more information. Harvest Baskets It’s Harvest Basket time again! Nomination forms are available on our web site, www.lanecc.edu/ptk, and we hope to distribute 20 food baskets this year. We will organize boxes in the cafeteria starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 24. Distribution will be during the afternoons (2-6 p.m.) on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 25 and 26. If you know businesses that would be willing to donate food items, please contact us immediately. If you know Lane students who could use a little help during the Thanksgiving holiday, please consider nominating them. Scholarship Time!!! Early fall the time of year when you should be looking at scholarships for next fall. Some deadlines coming up soon are: * All-USA and Guistwhite: internal deadlines are Friday, November 14 * Nota Bene: Due at Headquarters Monday, December 1 * Jack Kent Cook: Internal deadline is Wednesday, January 14 There are workshops on campus that may help you be better prepared for your scholarship applications. Next Wednesday, November 12, Career and Employment Services is holding a workshop on University of Oregon scholarship programs. The session will be from 3-4:30 p.m. in Building 17, Room 309. Also, the new alumni chapter is hosting a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship workshop entitled Getting a Piece of the Pie on Saturday, December 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This workshop will be limited to 50 participants, so please register online at our chapter web site. Winter Induction If you would like to attend a small ceremony to be official sworn into Phi Theta Kappa, the winter induction will be on Wednesday, December 10, at 4 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. The ceremony will be held in place of our regular committee meeting in Building 2, Room 213. Alumni Chapter Chartering We have finalized the alumni chapter chartering paperwork, and it was submitted to the International Headquarters this week. The chartering ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at 6 p.m. All members, alumni, and friends may attend. Better World Books The remaining days for book pickups around Lane’s campus are: * Wednesday, November 26 (the day before Thanksgiving) * Friday, December 12 (last day of fall term) We will also continue collecting books in connection with the Bookstore’s regular book buy-back during finals week. This academic year we will be an official Books for Africa Chapter, and all our efforts will be focused on assisting that organization. As an official BFA chapter, we will learn more about how are textbook donates are used. Members may be eligible to join BFA on a trip to Eshowe, South Africa next summer to see their community.
