Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Zeta Chapter January 2009 Newsletter Hot Air Balloon Ride Raffle We are holding a raffle for two people to take a hot air balloon ride between June 1 and August 31. The ride is in the Albany area, and you will work with the pilot to schedule the flight date. Tickets are $3 each or 2 for $5. Contact any chapter member to purchase your tickets. The drawing will be held on Monday, February 16, so purchase your tickets soon! The pilot normally charges $250 per person, so this prize if valued at $500. What a great treat for you or a wonderful gift for someone else. Eugene Boat and Sportsman Show – Volunteers Needed! Sigma Zeta has been asked to staff the children’s fishing boot at the Sportsman Show on January 30-February 1, 2009. The event is held at the Lane County Fairgrounds, and approximately 40,000 attend. This is a great opportunity for service work, and it is FUN! If you would like to assist, please contact Dee Lauzon at 541-606-3366. By volunteering for a shift, you will be allowed free admission to the show. Friends and family are encouraged to help as well. Responsibilities include baiting (not live bait) hooks, helping the youth fish, networking with members of the community, and dispensing soda. Please contact Dee no later than next Monday, January 26. Scholarship Workshop Offered Again In case you missed the scholarship workshop offered by the Alumni Association, it will be held again on Friday, January 23, from 1-4 p.m. in Building 2, Room 203. The focus is on transfer scholarships and post-baccalaureate opportunities. “Reel” Dynamics of Affluence Movie Discussion Sigma Zeta is presenting The Bucket List as a topic of discussion about Affluence and Wellness. Join us for a discussion of the movie at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 26. Please bring snacks to share and your own beverage. Feel free to invite non-chapter members to participate as well. It has been two years since our last movie discussion, and it will be enlightening. Hugs and Kisses for Valentine’s Day Our chapter will be taking pre-orders for small gift bags of Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses on Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27. You may have your gift delivered to a class on Wednesday, February 11, or you may pick up your gifts on that day in the chapter office. 30th Avenue Road Cleanup Our regular 30th Avenue Road Cleanup is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, February 16. Campus is closed that day for Presidents’ Day, so it will give us an opportunity to clean 30th Avenue on a week day. We will gather in Lot N in the northeast corner of Lane’s campus. After the cleanup, we will gather in the Business Building (Building 2) for a potluck. If you would like to participate in the potluck, please contact Ashley Bertucci for details. Winter Induction Winter induction will be at the beginning of our March 9 meeting. Any chapter member who has not been inducted may attend. Induction is an informal ceremony, and you may bring family and friends. SOLV Beach Cleanup Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 28. That is the next SOLV beach cleanup. We are currently making plans for the event. Normally we stay on the coast on Friday and Saturday nights and include leadership and scholarship activities. Details will be available in February’s newsletter.
