Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Zeta Chapter August 2008 Newsletter The Paradox of Wellness (includes physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual health) A New Office! The biggest news this month is that our chapter has a new office! The new office is in a much more visible location in Building 17 (the Forum Building), Room 312. The area is approximately 12’x16’ and will hold two workstations and a work table. We are hoping to move this Thursday, August 7, starting at 1:30 p.m. If you would like to come help, we would greatly appreciate it. Our goal is to have the office open all day during the term, and we are looking at hiring Work Study students to staff it as well. If you or someone you know needs a Work Study position, please consider one of these positions. New Blog Our new blog is at sigmazeta.wordpress.com! Please check it out and give us some feedback. Meeting agendas are posted there, so you will always know what we are discussing. If you have input on any topic but cannot attend the meeting, please convey your ideas to Velda or one of the chapter officers. Alumni Gathering Some of you may already have received your invitation to the Alumni Gathering this fall. (If you did not receive an invitation in the mail, it means Headquarters does not have a current address for you. You may still attend.) We are inviting alumni (and a few students who might like to help) to come back to Lane, tour campus and the underground tunnels (the tunnels are fun), and help start an alumni chapter. To register for the event, please call or email Velda or go online to our chapter web site. There is a link from the home page to the online form. If you are able to help plan or assist with this gathering, please let Velda know. Honors Study Topic The International Honors Study Topic is The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences. Our chapter is looking at the Paradox of Wellness, and we have identified four areas where we are currently conducting research. (These are all listed in depth on the new blog.) Working in teams, members are learning more about the topics in preparation for a Wellness Fair to be held at the end of Fall Term. Our hope is to bring together the research with local companies and vendors that support wellness. Additionally, we anticipate a large service project related to the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals. If you are interested in becoming involved with any of these projects, please come to a chapter meeting or contact Velda or one of the chapter officers. Welcome Week Welcome Week is the first week of fall term, and we are planning activities for that week. If you have any ideas or would like to be involved, please let us know. Meetings Chapter meetings are currently being held on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in Building 2, Room 203. Normally we are finished by 5 p.m., but we may extend until 5:30 on some days. Please come and provide input into our activities. Check out the pictures on our Web Site!!!
