Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Zeta Chapter April 2008 Newsletter Choose Leadership and Make a Difference! Phi Theta Kappa 90th International Convention Our Chapter President Dee Lauzon won her campaign for International Vice President for Division IV. Chapter Vice President Megan Worman was her campaign manager. They did an awesome job and represented Sigma Zeta and Lane Community College extremely well. Other highlights and honors included: * Lane College President Mary Spilde received the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction * Lane College Vice President Sonya Christian received the Administrator Award of Distinction. * Chapter Advisor Velda Arnaud received the Paragon Award for New Advisors for the third year in a row. * The chapter received a Scholarship Hallmark Award. * The chapter was named as a Top 100 Chapter for the second year in a row, and now we are a Distinguished Chapter, which means we are in the Top 25! (There are over 1250 chapters internationally.) Now that Sigma Zeta is in the Top 25, wouldn’t you like to help take it higher? We need 2008-09 chapter officers. A link to the application is on our home page in the second section. All officer positions are available. Completed applications are due in Velda’s office by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 18. Elections will be held at our chapter meeting on April 21 at 4 p.m. in Building 2, Room 203. We are working at getting some stipends for chapter officers, and in order to receive one, the officer must be attending Lane Community College full time during the 2008-09 academic year. If you have any questions, please contact Velda. Elections for regional officers will be held at our conference in May, and if you are interesting in those positions, please let us know as well. It is a fantastic leadership opportunity. Information is also included in a link from our home page. Mark your Calendars for May 9-11, 2008 The Regional Awards Conference will be held in conjunction with Sigma Zeta’s 40th Anniversary. The event will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2008, and we will conclude about 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 11. Highlights will include: * Open remarks from Dr. Mary Spilde, Lane College President. * Introductory session on Social Intelligence Friday Evening. * Workshop sessions Saturday morning. * Guest speaker Sue Smith, Keep America Beautiful, Saturday midday. * Regional officer caucus Saturday afternoon. * Alumni social Saturday late afternoon. * Guest speaker Chief Jerry Smith, Springfield Police and Lane alumni, Saturday evening. * Guest speaker Dr. Dale Parnell, Lane’s First College President, Saturday evening. 30th Avenue Road Cleanup The next road cleanup will be on Sunday, May 18, 2008. We will meet at 9 a.m. in the northeast parking lot (Lot N). Following the cleanup, we will gather for lunch in the Business Department in Building 2. For those of you who travel on 30th Avenue, we hope you have seen an improvement since our chapter started maintaining that stretch of road. This one simple activity makes a huge difference in the environment. Please come help us keep Lane’s entry way litter free. Spring Term Formal Induction Our informal induction will be held on Friday, May 30, at 3 p.m. in the Boardroom in Building 3. Lane Vice President Sonya Christian will be our guest speaker. All new members who have not already been inducted may attend. We will have snacks, and family and friends are welcome. Upcoming Activities * LEAD participation: Volunteers are needed to staff it on April 27. * Lane’s We Care committee: Volunteers are need to help in the Food for Lane County gardens on May 17. * Graduation: Volunteers are needed to distribute programs and direct people. * Relay for Life: Sigma Zeta will have a team this July.
