Improv 3!
Judith "Sparky" Roberts will teach Advanced Improvisation for actors with prior experience and skills. The class will be offered as a Summer Intensive, meeting twice a week, from June 22 - July 30.
Students will run the range between comedy and serious themes, create characters and scenes, and create some scripted pieces for a final performance. The class also will explore children's theatre and social uses of improvisation.
Prerequisite: Improvisational Theatre 1, 2, or permission of the Instructor..

TA 101 - The Play's the Thing - 3

This three course sequence teaches the beginning play-reader how to embrace a dramatic script, and appreciate plot structure,
character development, and thematic issues. Students will read and discuss a variety of plays in different styles and genres, and view videos that illustrate these plays in production. This course provides students with the appreciation and basic knowledge
of three disciplines: acting, movement, and singing. Informal
performances are used to reduce stage fright, build confidence,
and showcase student talents. Three teachers, all performing
professionals, will collaborate continuously to present a
meaningful and comprehensive introduction to their fields.
Readings, improvisation, kinesthetic involvement, vocal participation,
plus appearances by guest artists, will be used to show how
technique arises from express artistic vision. Assessment is based
on class participation, class projects, and final paper. TA

This course introduces the student to the process of developing theatrical
costumes from the concept of the designer to the construction of
the actual garments. The student will have an opportunity to
help construct costumes for an actual theatre production. TA
141 - Acting 1 (Beginning) - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None
This class introduces the student to basic acting skills. Class
exercising focus on increased self-awareness, observation
skills, relaxation to character analysis and scene study. No
prior experience necessary. This course prepares students for continuing
on in the beginning acting class sequence. TA

Acting 1 (TA 141)
Second term of the Beginning Acting sequence. Students are
introduced to monologue audition techniques., in-depth character
analysis and more advanced scene work. TA
143 - Acting 3 (Beginning) - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Acting 2 (TA 142)
Third term of the Beginning Acting sequence. Students continue
in-depth character analysis and apply it to more advanced scene
work. This course prepares students for continuing on in the
Intermediate Acting sequence. TA
144 - Improvisational Theatre 1 - 3 Credits - Generally

None
Students learn theater games and disciplines, scene development,
actors' exercises and role-playing. Participants put their
creative energy into action, releasing their inhibitions,
expanding their imaginations, and sharpening their wits. This
class is essential training for actors; useful for others, too! TA
145 - Improvisational Theatre 2 - 3 Credits - Generally
offered Winter term. (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Improvisational Theatre 1 (TA 144) or consent of
instructor.
Students apply the principles of improvisation to character development
and scene analysis as well as to everyday life, learn devices
for scene transitions, and study and practice historical styles. TA
146 - Improvisational Theatre 3 - 3 Credits - Generally

Improvisational Theatre 2 (TA 145) or consent of
instructor.
Students prepare performance material from improvised scenes,
and then present this material to various audiences, each performance
having a specific goal related to the course. TA
147 - Voice for the Actor - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None
This is a one-term class designed to develop the entire vocal
process as it relates to the needs of the actor. This course is valuable
also to anyone wanting to develop a more interesting voice and
this better coal communication. Topics include voice production,
diction, and stage dialects, which will be taught through the
use of vocal exercises and selected readings. TA
148 - Movement for the Actor - 2 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:

This course is designed to make students more aware of the
visual and physical aspects of drama, and to improve the
students' expression through movement. TA
149 - Dance for Musical Theatre - 2 Credits
- (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None
Participants will be introduced to dance theories and techniques
as applied to musical theatre production. This class draws on
styles of folk, ballroom, jazz, and popular period dance. It is
a valuable course for the acting student, developing ease and
grace or stage movement. It is also valuable for the dance
student, developing character portrayal for the stage. TA
153 - Theatre Rehearsal and Performance - 1-3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Consent of the instructor.
This class is designed to provide practical application of
classroom theory. The course may be repeated for a maximum of 9
credits. Should betaken by participants in a theatrical
production of this department scheduled for public performance. TA
164 - Writing for the Theatre 1 - 3 Credits -(Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None
This course is the first in a series that teaches students
beginning stage writing. The series consists of exercises in
listening to, recording and scripting stage events. The focus of
this sequence is on the essentials of creating theatre events.
This sequence may be taken for a maximum of six terms. TA

Second term of a three term sequence. Concentrates on the basic

events, including design, directing concepts, movement and sound

This one-term class introduces the student to the exciting world
of theatre. Students explore how plays and musicals are created,
how they are produced, and what makes them different from
television or film. Students gain an appreciation for the collaborative
nature of theatre, exploring the work of actors, designers,
directors, playwrights, and audience. no prior experience is necessary.
May be use to meet arts and letters requirements at the
University of Oregon. TA 227 -
Stage Makeup - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None.
Stage Makeup covers the history, purpose, and especially the
technique of application of theatrical makeup. Students stydy
the use of makeup in various theatrical media, with emphasis on
stage performers. TA 241 -
Intermediate Acting - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Three terms of Acting 1 Beginning (TA 141, TA
142, and TA 143)
or equivalent experience with instructor's approval.
This course concentrates on the problems of characterization.
Students perform from contemporary and classical theatre
literature. The three-course sequence may be repeated for a

245 - Acting Styles - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Instructor's permission
This advanced acting course introduces the acting student to the
rich world of acting styles, focusing on several styles
outside of contemporary realism. Students read and analyze play
scripts, view video productions of plays and movies that pertain
to this rich stylistic tradition, learn vocal exercises that
focus on the verbal wit of these scripts, lean physical exercises
that focus on the period movement necessary for performance of
these scripts (fanwork, bows, curtsies, etc.), and perform
scenes from these plays. Playwrights may include Ibsen, Chekov,
Wilde, Moliere, Sheridan, Shakespeare, and others. TA
253 - Theatre Rehearsal and Performance - 1-3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Instructor's Permission
This class is designed to provide practical application of
classroom theory and skills. Should be taken by participants in
a theatrical production of the Music, Dance, and Theatre Arts
Department that is scheduled for public performance. This course
may be repeated for a maximum of nine credits. TA
264 - Writing for the Theatre 2 - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Writing for the Theatre 1 (TA 164, TA
165, and TA 166) or
equivalent course experience as determined by the instructor.
A continuation of Writing for the Theatre 1, this sequence
focuses on the rewriting process of script development. Topics
include beginning the process of rewriting, including cold
readings, basic elements of script analysis, and event reshaping
along with continuing work on projects. The Writing for the
Theatre 2 sequence can be taken for up to six quarters total. TA
265 - Writing for the Theatre 2 - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Writing for the Theatre 1 (TA 164, TA
165, and TA 166) or
equivalent course experience as determined by the instructor.
A continuation of Writing for the Theatre 1, this sequence
focuses on the rewriting process of script development. Topics
include analysis of stage event theory, approaches to play
development, and continued work on projects. The Writing for the
Theatre 2 sequence can be taken for up to six quarters total. TA
266 - Writing for the Theatre 2 - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
Writing for the Theatre 1 (TA 164, TA
165, and TA 166) or
equivalent course experience as determined by the instructor.
A continuation of Writing for the Theatre 1, this sequence
focuses on the rewriting process of script development. Topics
include final staging, writing of special projects resulting in
public presentations in studio theatre, analysis of studio
responses, business of playwriting, and play submission
procedures. The Writing for the
Theatre 2 sequence can be taken for up to six quarters total. TA
271 - Irish Theatre and Culture - 3 Credits - (Check class schedule for availability) Prerequisite:
None
This course introduces the student to the rich world of Irish
theatre, dramatic literature, music, video productions, dancing,
art, and folk traditions and beliefs. Students read and analyze
play scripts, view video productions of plays and movies, and
lean to discuss and appreciate our own individual cultural
backgrounds, whatever they may be. Discussions center around how
a whole culture can be expressed through the arts and
literature. Students gain proficiency in script analysis of
plays from the Irish dramatic canon. Texts are read and analyzed
with the theatre production in mind. Students also fain an
appreciation for the culture and theatre of Ireland (and thereby
increase their own personal cultural appreciation) through their
exposure to Irish plays, videos, music, dancing, and art.
