Music Classes:

MUS 101 - Music Fundamentals - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None, but students may find it helpful to take Group Piano (Music 131) at the same time. 

  • This course provides the student and opportunity to develop a working knowledge of the elements of music. Students learn the basic skills needed to read, write, analyze, and compose simple music. This course prepares a student for Music Theory 1. 

MUS 107 - Audio Engineering 1 - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisites: MUS 101, MUS 118 and MUS 119

  • Audio engineering is available for  students who are seeking the tools to work and function as a recording engineer in a recording environment (i.e., recording studio or live concert recording). Students will meet with the instructor in the recording studio where the following topics, among others, will be addressed and demonstrated: sound and hearing, studio acoustics, microphones (choices and positioning), mixing board, recording technology, tracking, audio editing, signal processing, monitoring, mixing, mastering, work flow, and professionalism. Successful completion of this class leads to opportunities to work with a faculty producer on future defined projects in the recording studio.  

MUS 109 - Audio Engineering 2 - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audio Engineering (MUS 107)

  • This class is the second term of a three term sequence. These classes are designed to take the student through the entire process of recording, mixing, producing audio.  It meets in the recording studio. Read the description of MUS 107 above for further details.

MUS 110 - Audio Engineering 3 - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audio Engineering (MUS 109)

  • This class is the third term of a three term sequence. These classes are designed to take the student through the entire process of recording, mixing, producing audio.  It meets in the recording studio. Read the description of MUS 107 above for further details.

MUS 111 - Music Theory 1 - 4 Credits - Generally offered fall term.

  • Prerequisite: Placement test or MUS 101 required. 

  • Co-requisite: Sight Reading/Ear Training (MUS 114)

  • First term of a three term sequence. Thorough review of the fundamentals of music followed by their application to melody, harmony and rhythm through analysis and composition. Students having little or no piano background should take Group Piano for a better understanding of the keyboard.

MUS 112 - Music Theory 1 - 4 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

MUS 113 - Music Theory 1 - 4 Credits - Generally offered spring term.

  • Prerequisite: Music Theory 1 (MUS 112)

  • Co-requisite: Sight Reading/Ear Training (MUS 116).

MUS 114 - Sight Reading and Ear Training - 3 Credits - Generally offered fall term.

It includes the study of rhythm and meter, tonality and modality (solfeggio) scales, triads and seventh chords, cadences, and conducing patterns. 

MUS 115 - Sight Reading and Ear Training - 3 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

  • Co-requisite: Music Theory 1 (MUS 112)

  • Second term of a three term sequence. In this class one will develop the skills necessary to read melodies at sight and to notate melodies one hears. It includes the study of rhythm and meter, tonality and modality (solfeggio) scales, triads and seventh chords, cadences, and conducing patterns. 

MUS 116 - Sight Reading and Ear Training - 3 Credits - Generally offered spring term.

  • Co-requisite: Music Theory 1 (MUS 113)

  • Third term of a three term sequence. In this class one will develop the skills necessary to read melodies at sight and to notate melodies one hears. It includes the study of rhythm and meter, tonality and modality (solfeggio) scales, triads and seventh chords, cadences, and conducing patterns. 

MUS 118 - Music Technology MIDI/Audio 1

  • Prerequisite: None

  • This course provides a student with an opportunity, through group instruction and hands-on experience, to study current applications of music technology in a comprehensive MIDI/audio studio. Students will learn to use various music production tools, using MIDI sequencing, patch editing, digital audio recording, MIDI networking, digital effects devices and plug-ins, and both digital and analog mixing systems. Each student is assigned to one of the twenty MIDI/audio studios, where they will complete creative lab assignments. Students will work in the studios a minimum of 3 hours per week outside of class.

MUS 119 - Music Technology MIDI/Audio 2 -

  • Prerequisite: Music Technology 1 (MUS 118)

  • This course provides a student with an opportunity, through group instruction and hands-on experience, to study advanced techniques in the field of music technology in a comprehensive MIDI/audio studio. Students will learn advanced applications of synthesizers, professional sound recording/editing software, MIDI networking, MIDI sequencing, digital effects and both analog and digital mixing. In addition, students will gain experience in syncing sound and music to digital movies. Students will also have the opportunity to work with many audio formats such as AIFF, SDII, WAV, and MP3 as they work n heir sound event projects. Students will work in the studios a minimum of 3 hours per week outside of class.

MUS 120 - Music Notation in Finale - 3 Credits -

  • Prerequisites: Three terms of Music Theory 1 (MUS 111, MUS 112, and MUS 113.)

  • Learn to operate Finale, a music notation software program.

MUS 131 - Group Piano - 2 Credits -

  • Prerequisite: None. 

  • Intended for readers, non-readers and music theory students. This course is for students who are interested in learning to play piano or continuing their keyboard studies. There are sections for students who have no experience reading music and for people who do. The course provides group instruction covering principles of piano playing and may be repeated for credit. Up to six credits may be transferred.

MUS 134 - Group Voice - 2 Credits -

  • Prerequisite: None. 

  • This class is designed to help students develop their voices for singing. They will be instructed in vocal techniques that will improve the quality of their voices. They will learn about diction, phrasing, dynamics, expression, posture, breath control, and vocal resonance. They will also learn how to cope with the fear of singing in front of others.

MUS 137 - Group Guitar - 2 Credits -

  • Prerequisite: None. 

  • The student must have access to an acoustical guitar. Group guitar provides a basic orientation to guitar techniques that encompasses accompaniment and solo skills. Students will learn to read standard musical notation. A variety of strumming and finger-picking techniques are taught to accompany singing.

MUS 161 - Jazz Improvisation: Instrumental - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Music Reading or concurrent enrollment in MUS101 is recommended.

  • Students will study elements of jazz theory as they relate to jazz improvisation. Jazz standards, melodies and chord progressions will serve as the focus of study. Students will improvise, transcribe solos and memorize jazz "heads."

MUS 164 - Jazz Improvisation: Vocal - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Music Reading or concurrent enrollment in MUS101 is recommended.

  • This course will expose students to a variety of styles in the jazz idiom and provide an opportunity for the growth and development of improvisational skills within this idiom.

MUS 185 - Instrumental Performance - 1 Credit

  • Co-requisite - Individual Lessons (Instrumental)

  • Instrumental performance is designed for instrumental students at MUP 170 or above who are taking individual lessons and are preparing for a career in music. This class focuses on the art of performance.

MUS 186 - Vocal Performance - 1 Credit

  • Co-requisite - Individual Lessons (Voice)

  • The vocal performance class is an advanced level class designed for serious students of singing who are studying privately and wish to prepare for a career in performance or education and/or excel in the craft for personal reasons.

MUS 201 - Introduction to Music and its Literature - 3 Credits - Generally offered fall term.

  • Prerequisite: None.

  • This course is the first term of a three term series. Students survey, listen to and study classical music from antiquity to the present. Music of representative composers from each of the musical periods will be studied to follow the effect of musical experimentation and outside influences of the growth of musical style.

MUS 202 - Introduction to Music and its Literature - 3 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

MUS 203 - Introduction to Music and its Literature - 3 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

MUS 205 - Introduction to Jazz History - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None

  • This course provides the student with listening skills and a historical overview of jazz from its origins to the present. Emphasis is on in-class listening and discussion of the misc. No musical background is needed to take this class. Satisfies arts and letters and ethnic/gender/cultural diversity contexts.

MUS 211 - Music Theory 2 - 4 Credits - Generally offered fall term.

  • Prerequisite: Three terms of Music Theory 1 ( MUS 111, MUS 112, and MUS 113.)

  • Co-requisite: Sight Reading and Ear Training (MUS 224)

  • This is the first term of a three term series. In this sequence, the second year of music theory, students continue their study of the disciplines of composing, analyzing, performing and improvising original and published music of different style periods. Emphasis is on terminology and music concepts from the Renaissance to the present day, Practical keyboard skills are also emphasized.

MUS 212 - Music Theory 2 - 4 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

MUS 213 - Music Theory 2 - 4 Credits - Generally offered spring term.

MUS 224 -Sight Reading and Ear Training - 2 Credits - Generally offered fall term.

MUS 225 -Sight Reading and Ear Training - 2 Credits - Generally offered winter term.

MUS 226 -Sight Reading and Ear Training - 2 Credits - Generally offered spring term.

MUS 261 - Music History - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisites: Two terms of Music Theory or equivalent.

  • MUS 261 is a survey of the music that influenced the course of Western music. Studies will cover basic stylistic concepts of the antique through the early baroque periods. Requirements: Reading and research, guided listening, and analysis. Students may enter any term. 

MUS 262 - Music History - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisites: Two terms of Music Theory or equivalent.

  • MUS 262 is a survey of the music, lives and times of the composers and music that influenced the course of Western Music. This section covers the late baroque, classical and early romantic periods. Requirements: Reading and research, guided listening, and analysis. Students may enter any term. 

MUS 263 - Music History - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisites: Two terms of Music Theory or equivalent.

  • MUS 263 covers the music and composers of the late romantic period through the twentieth century. Requirements: Reading and research, guided listening, and analysis. Students may enter any term. 

MUS 264 - History of Rock Music 1 - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None.

  • This course provides the student with historical context, listening skills and cultural context for rock music from its beginnings through the early British invasion. Emphasis is on in-class listening and discussion of music.

MUS 265 - History of Rock Music 2 - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None.

  • This course provides the student with historical context, listening skills and cultural context for rock music from psychedelic rock through early rap. Emphasis is on in-class listening and discussion of music.

MUS 270 - Jazz Theory - 3 Credits

  • Prerequisites: MUS 111 and MUS 112
  • This one term course in jazz theory will introduce the student to concepts of jazz harmony, melody, rhythm, form, timbre and instrumental performance practice. The focus will be on analyses of jazz compositions and improvisation techniques as well as traditional concepts of music theory.

MUS 291 - Chamber Choir - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audition required.

  • This is a select vocal ensemble that rehearses and performs choral chamber usc from the medieval period to the present.

MUS 292 - Vocal Jazz Ensemble - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audition required. Full year commitment.

  • Read, rehearse, and perform music of the vocal jazz idiom including swing, blues, Latin, and ballad styles. Student must have the ability to learn music on his or her own, be at rehearsal prepared and on time, and have an enthusiasm for the music.

MUS 293  - Jazz Combo - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Music reading or concurrent enrollment in Music Fundamentals (MUS 101) is required. No audition required.

  • This course is for instrumentalists wishing to study jazz styles in a small group (combo) setting. Students form several small ensembles of up to seven players to study jazzstandards from the Real Book and other jazz "fake books." Emphasis is placed on performance styles as well as fundamentals/elements of jazz theory as they relate to harmonic form, improvisation and listening. Heavy emphasis on rhythm section playing. 

MUS 294 - Jazz Ensemble - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audition required.

  • Jazz Ensemble is a class for students who wish to study jazz music in a performance environment. The class is limited to six saxophones, five trumpets, five trombones, piano, bass guitar, and trap set.

MUS 295 - Symphonic Band - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None. No audition required.

  • Symphonic Band provides and opportunity for woodwind, brass, and percussion students to study, rehearse, and perform all types of concert band literature.

MUS 296 - Chamber Orchestra - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: Audition is required

  • This course blends the talents of experienced community string players with the needs of student musicians creating an excellent ensemble experience for all. Chamber Orchestra plays three programs each year. Rehearsals are Monday evenings, 7-9:50 p.m.

MUS 297 - Concert Choir - 2 Credits

  • Prerequisite: None. No audition required.

  • This class is open to anyone interested in singing in a large ensemble. No prior experience is required. Students develop their vocal skills and learn music of various periods and styles in preparation for at least one public performance each term.
