This course provides the
student and opportunity to develop a working knowledge of
the elements of music. Students learn the basic skills
needed to read, write, analyze, and compose simple music.
This course prepares a student for Music Theory 1.
MUS 107 - Audio Engineering

101, MUS 118 and MUS

Audio engineering is available
for students who are seeking the tools to work and
function as a recording engineer in a recording environment
(i.e., recording studio or live concert recording). Students
will meet with the instructor in the recording
studio where the following topics, among others, will be
addressed and demonstrated: sound and hearing, studio
acoustics, microphones (choices and positioning), mixing
board, recording technology, tracking, audio editing, signal
processing, monitoring, mixing, mastering, work flow, and
professionalism. Successful completion of this class leads
to opportunities to work with a faculty producer on future
defined projects in the recording studio.

MUS 118 - Music
Technology MIDI/Audio 1

This course provides a
student with an opportunity, through group instruction and
hands-on experience, to study current applications of music
technology in a comprehensive MIDI/audio studio. Students
will learn to use various music production tools, using MIDI
sequencing, patch editing, digital audio recording, MIDI
networking, digital effects devices and plug-ins, and both
digital and analog mixing systems. Each student is assigned to
one of the twenty MIDI/audio studios,
where they will complete creative lab assignments. Students
will work in the studios a minimum of 3 hours per week
outside of class.
MUS 119 - Music
Technology MIDI/Audio 2 -

Music Technology 1 (MUS 118).

This course provides a
student with an opportunity, through group instruction and
hands-on experience, to study advanced techniques in the
field of music technology in a comprehensive MIDI/audio
studio. Students will learn advanced applications of
synthesizers, professional sound recording/editing software,
MIDI networking, MIDI sequencing, digital effects and both
analog and digital mixing. In addition, students will gain
experience in syncing sound and music to digital movies.
Students will also have the opportunity to work with many
audio formats such as AIFF, SDII, WAV, and MP3 as they work
n heir sound event projects. Students will work in the
studios a minimum of 3 hours per week outside of class.
MUS 120 - Music Notation

Intended for readers,
non-readers and music theory students. This course is for
students who are interested in learning to play piano or
continuing their keyboard studies. There are sections for
students who have no experience reading music and for people
who do. The course provides group instruction covering
principles of piano playing and may be repeated for credit.
Up to six credits may be transferred.
MUS 134 - Group Voice

This class is designed to
help students develop their voices for singing. They will be
instructed in vocal techniques that will improve the quality
of their voices. They will learn about diction, phrasing,
dynamics, expression, posture, breath control, and vocal
resonance. They will also learn how to cope with the fear of
singing in front of others.

elements of jazz theory as they relate to jazz
improvisation. Jazz standards, melodies and chord
progressions will serve as the focus of study. Students will
improvise, transcribe solos and memorize jazz
"heads."

a three term series. In this sequence, the second year of
music theory, students continue their study of the disciplines
of composing, analyzing, performing and improvising original
and published music of different style periods. Emphasis is

the present day, Practical keyboard skills are also emphasized.

This one term course in
jazz theory will introduce the student to concepts of jazz

performance practice. The focus will be on analyses of jazz
compositions and improvisation techniques as well as
traditional concepts of music theory.

Prerequisite: Audition required. Full year commitment.

Read, rehearse, and perform music of the vocal jazz idiom including swing, blues, Latin, and ballad styles. Student must have the ability to learn music on his or her own, be at rehearsal prepared and on time, and have an enthusiasm for the music.
MUS 293 - Jazz Combo - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: Music reading or concurrent enrollment in Music
Fundamentals (MUS 101) is required. No audition required.

This course is for
instrumentalists wishing to study jazz styles in a small
group (combo) setting. Students form several small ensembles
of up to seven players to study jazzstandards from the Real
Book and other jazz "fake books." Emphasis is
placed on performance styles as well as
fundamentals/elements of jazz theory as they relate to
harmonic form, improvisation and listening. Heavy emphasis
on rhythm section playing.
MUS 294 - Jazz
Ensemble - 2 Credits

required.

Jazz Ensemble is a class
for students who wish to study jazz music in a performance
environment. The class is limited to six saxophones, five
trumpets, five trombones, piano, bass guitar, and trap set.
MUS 295 - Symphonic Band - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: None. No audition required.

Symphonic Band provides and opportunity for woodwind, brass, and percussion students to study, rehearse, and perform all types of concert band literature.
MUS 296 - Chamber
Orchestra - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: Audition is

This course blends the talents of experienced community string players with the needs of student musicians creating an excellent ensemble experience for all. Chamber Orchestra plays three programs each year. Rehearsals are Monday evenings, 7-9:50 p.m.
MUS 297 - Concert

Prerequisite: None. No
audition required.

This class is open to
anyone interested in singing in a large ensemble. No prior
experience is required. Students develop their vocal skills and
learn music of various periods and styles in preparation for
at least one public performance each term.
